Tennessee Releases 2002 Football Schedule
June 10, 2000 | General
Tennessee Athletic Director Doug Dickey released the Vols' 2002 football schedule today, a 12-game slate which includes two games in Nashville and trips to Georgia, South Carolina and Mississippi State, in addition to seven home games. The home schedule offers a first-ever visit by Miami (Fla.) to Knoxville for the Vols' annual homecoming contest. "This is the first season of the 12-game schedule allowed by the NCAA," Dickey said. "We were fortunate to find a team which could play in the middle of the season and the addition of Big East opponent Rutgers to the schedule made it possible for us to have a 12th game." The 2002 slate will also see the Vols end the season against Kentucky, instead of Vanderbilt for the first time since 1944. Beginning in 2002, the Vols and Kentucky will play on Thanksgiving weekend with the UT-Vanderbilt game played the week before. "At the request of Vanderbilt, Kentucky and Tennessee have agreed to reverse the dates at the end of our schedule, allowing the Vanderbilt student body a greater opportunity to attend their final game of the season," said Dickey. "Our midstate area fans will have two opportunities to see us play in the 2002 season." The Vols 2002 season opener against Wyoming will be played at Adelphia Stadium after the Cowboys agreed to move the game from Laramie. The Vol-Cowboy game will be sponsored by the Music City Bowl. | |
