Knoxville, Tenn. - Tennessee pounded out 16 hits and scored a season-high in runs, but it wasn't enough as the Bowling Green State Falcons used a four-run second and five-run eighth to turn back the Volunteers, 15-11, in the series finale at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Walter Sevilla paced the Volunteers (3-6) with three hits, while five others had two each.
Jordan Czarniecki hit an inside-the-park home run and drove in three runs, while Dennis Gomez also hit his first home run as the Vols also added five doubles.
Kelly Hunt, Corey Loomis and Tim Newell each had three hits to lead the 18-hit Falcon attack. Hunt drove in a game-high four runs and hit his first home run of the season in the ninth, capping BGSU's scoring.
Loomis also hit a home run in the third, while Newell had two of the Falcons five doubles.
Matt Hundley (1-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Keith Laughlin who allowed four runs on seven hits in four innings.
Hundley worked an inning and a third before giving way to Ryan Lindquist, who pitched one inning.
Neil Schmitz earned the save as he pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings to finish the game.
Jay Sadlowe (0-2) suffered the loss in his first career start. He gave up five runs on six hits in just two innings of work.
Patrick Hicklen, who was pulled from the starting rotation, did not fare any better as he was tagged for seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in three innings.
Dusty Johnson threw the final four innings for Tennessee, allowing three runs on four hits.
Bowling Green State broke on top in the first inning as David Barkholz scored on a sacrfice fly, but the Vols answered with two in the bottom of the frame on a ground out and a single by Matt Sternberg for a 2-1 lead.
The Falcons went back on top for good in the second as they plated four runs on four hits, keyed by a bases loaded two-run single by Jeff Warnock. Warnock later scored on a sacrifice fly and Len Elias added an RBI double for a 5-2 BGSU lead.
Czaniecki's inside-the-park home run cut the gap to 5-3 in the bottom of the frame. But the Falcons extended their lead to 7-3 in the third on a Loomis home run and an RBI single by Barkholz.
Tennessee added single runs in fourth and fifth innings on a solo home run by Gomez and a double by Hal Bibee, respectively, to cut the lead to 7-5.
Five Falcon hits, including two-run singles by Nick Elrod and Newell and a double by Loomis, helped the Falcons extend their lead to 12-5.
The Vols added three in the bottom of the frame on a wild pitch, a ground out and a single by Chad LeGate to pull within 12-8.
Kelly Hunt's two-run double in the seventh gave the Falcons a 14-8 lead.
A two-run double by Czarniecki and a Chris Heath double once again cut the Falcon lead to 14-11. That would be as close as the Vols would get as Hunt added an insurance run for the Falcons in the ninth with a solo home run to center.
Schmitz retired the first two hitters in the ninth before giving up a double to Chris Heath and then got a LeGate to ground out to third to end the game.
