Tennessee baseball players James Adkins and J.P. Arencibia were both named to the seventh annual preseason Division I All-America team chosen by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Tuesday. The rising Vols sophomores each earned third-team status after garnering Freshman All-America acclaim a season ago.
Adkins, a left-handed pitcher from Mt. Juliet, Tenn., posted a 10-5 record and a 3.32 ERA in 2005. His 135 strikeouts marked the most-ever in a single season by a Tennessee freshman, and his stellar play in the postseason was validated when he was named Most Outstanding Player of the 2005 NCAA Knoxville Regional.
The 2005 Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year last season, Arencibia enters his sophomore campaign fresh off an outstanding summer stint with the USA Baseball National Team. The Miami, Fla., native led the elite American squad with a .404 batting average, 23 hits and 12 RBIs. During the 2005 college season, Arencibia collected 91 hits and clubbed a UT freshman-record 14 home runs.
Tennessee earned a berth in the NCAA College World Series for the fourth time in school history last season. The Vols open the 2006 season with a three-game series at Florida Atlantic Feb. 3-5.
