Golfers Finish 11th at Suntrust Gator Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Tennessee men's golf team fired a 290-301-295--886 to finish 11th at the Suntrust Gator Invitational. The tournament was held at the University Golf Course (par 70, 6,701 yards).
Senior David Skinns led the No. 21 Vols with a 12th-place finish. Skinns finished the tournament with a third-round score of 70 (even par) to go with a 74-72 from day one for a scorecard total of 216.
Freshman Philip Pettitt and senior Ross McGowan were next in UT scoring in a tie for 27th. Pettitt finished the tournament with a scorecard of 73-74-74--221, while McGowan fired a 69-76-76--221.
Next for the Vols was freshman Ben Spickard in a tie for 53rd with a 74-79-75--228. Rounding out the Tennessee competitors was sophomore Tino Weiss in a tie for 76th after carding an 85-80-78--243.
Florida defended their home course and claimed the team championship with a 287-291-280--858. Day one leader and sixth-ranked Wake Forest finished second with a 286-291-289--866. Rounding out the top five was Florida State (868) in third, South Carolina (869) in fourth and Central Florida (876) in fifth.
Golfweek Top 25 teams that finished the tournament include No. 18 Georgia State in sixth with an 877, No. 24 Georgia Southern in ninth with an 881, No. 25 Purdue in 10th with an 882 and No. 9 Kentucky in 14th with a 908.
Jonas Blixt of Florida State claimed individual medallist honors with a 71-70-68--209. There was a three-way tie for second between Erik Johansen of South Carolina, Heath West of LSU and Brett Stegmaier of Florida with scores of 211.
The Vols next tournament will be the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Jacksonville, Fla., Feb. 20-22. The tournament, considered one of the most prestigious of the spring season, will once again be held at Sawgrass Golf and Country Club.
