INTERVIEW OF COACH Buzz Peterson BEFORE HOME GAMES WITH ALABAMA WEDNESDAY AND FLORIDA SATURDAY
1. If Brandon Crump returns, as hoped, for Wednesday's game with Alabama, how will experience gained by some of the Vols in his absence help the UT cause?
A - "I think it really helps Major Wingate, who had some big games in Brandon's absence as did Andre Patterson. While he was sidelined, we also had a good look at a smaller lineup that gave us quickness we had not previously enjoyed. On Brandon's return, he's going to need to adjust to whatever role created in his absence that will help us win. That small group did a nice job for us, especially against LSU."
2. Explain how the hustle and drive of 6-5 sophomore Dane Bradshaw contributes to Tennessee's success.
A - "Dane is very valuable to us, even though you won't find him high up on the stat sheet. He takes on guys who are often bigger than he is, but he operates quietly and gets a lot done behind the scenes. He works at becoming a better player every time out. I'm really glad Dane is a Vol."
3. What will it take to keep playing the suffocating type of defense the Vols displayed during much of the LSU game last Saturday?
A - "We need to keep putting pressure on the ball at all times, making sure the other four players are in support position. We also need to limit the opponents' opportunities by controlling the backboards. We can't allow second and third shots, so it's necessary for us to box out."
4. What factors can lead to a Tennessee victory when nationally-ranked Alabama comes to Thompson-Boling Arena Wednesday night (8:00E)?
A - "Alabama's a very good team. They will come in here emotionally fired up after losing to Florida at Gainesville. Their half-court offense is explosive. They have tremendous shooters in Earnest Shelton and Kennedy Winston. They are good defenders and have inside strength in Chuck Davis. We need some shots out of transition."
5. How much of a challenge will be presented Saturday (5:00E) when Florida comes to town, still smarting over an earlier loss to the Vols in Gainesville?
A - "Florida will be fired up. Matt Walsh will probably play 30 minutes or more after missing much of the game at Gainesville. Anthony Roberson is one of the best players in the league. David Lee and Al Horford can dominate the backboards. Florida will be a very tough test for us."
