Dr. William T. Youmans, the University of Tennessee's head team orthopedic surgeon, has been voted the 2005 SEC Team Physician of the Year. The University of Tennessee men's and women's athletic training programs will share a $1,000 award, and Dr. Youmans will receive a plaque commemorating his achievement.
"We have been very fortunate to enjoy the consistency and proven successful track record that is clearly second to none with Doc Youmans directing the orthopedic care for our University of Tennessee athletic programs," said Keith Clements, head athletics trainer for men's athletics. "It is truly an honor for our colleagues in the Southeastern Conference to recognize him with this award. On behalf of all the student-athletes that have come under his care during his tenure, we thank him for extending their athletic careers and let him know that he is very much appreciated."
Dr. Youmans has worked with UT athletics since he joined the Knoxville Orthopedic Clinic in 1968. He provides orthopedic care for all of UT's athletic programs, and the William T. Youmans Head Athletic Trainers Office in the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center was named to honor his contribution to the athletic training program in 2003.
"Dr. Youmans is an outstanding orthopedic surgeon who has an immense and genuine dedication to his patients. His tremendous skills, dedication to patient care and education, use of cutting-edge technology and teamwork have made it possible for countless UT athletes to return to competition in the sport they love and live healthier and productive lives as UT alumni," said Jenny Moshak, assistant athletic director for sports medicine.
Dr. Youmans will be presented with his plaque at both the Southern Orthopedic Association meeting held in conjunction with the SEC Men's Basketball Tournament in Atlanta, Ga., on Thursday, March 10 and at the SEC Sports Medicine Meeting in Opelika, Ala., in May.
