SEA ISLAND, Ga.--The Tennessee men's golf team stands sixth after the second round of play at the 2005 SEC Golf Championships with a scorecard of 298-298--596. Senior David Skinns made a move today to enter Sunday's final round tied for second with a 72-70--142; one stroke off the lead.
Skinns improved his scoring by two strokes during the second round. The beginning of the second round saw him bogey two of the first four holes. From there he would par the next five to make the turn at 2-over-par. Another bogey on 13 took him to 3-over-par, but he calmed down and birdied 15, 16 and 18 to finish the round even. Skinns is looking to become the first Tennessee golfer since Mike Sposa in 1990 to win the SEC Individual title.
Next for the Vols is senior Ross McGowan. McGowan carded a 73 to go with his first-round score of 74 for a total of 147, tying him for 11th. After bogeying the first hole, McGowan would string together 11-straight pars before two more bogeys on 13 and 15. He would then par the remaining three holes to complete the round.
Freshman Philip Pettitt stands third in Vol scoring with a 71-78--149 to tie him for 20th. Pettitt struggled on the front nine with a 7-over-par 42, but was able to limit his mistakes to just one bogey during the final nine holes. He recorded par on 10 through 17 before a bogey on 18.
Junior Lloyd Campbell improved his play by four strokes during the second round with a scorecard of 81-77--158. Campbell, who is in 51st-place, improved his play on the back nine after shooting 5-over-par on the front. After bogeys on 10 and 13 he settled down and parred the remaining five holes.
