TO OUR GREAT FANS
The 2004-05 academic year was another great one for Tennessee athletics, and none of these accomplishments would be possible without you, our loyal fans.
We are blessed to have great coaches and talented student-athletes. Certainly 2004-05 was by any measure a very good athletic year for the University of Tennessee. For the first time in the school's history, UT finished in the Top 10 in the Sports Academy Directors' Cup - coming in eighth. We also placed third overall in the Excellence in Athletics rankings. The women's track and field team won its first-ever NCAA Indoor Championship. We had SEC championships in soccer, volleyball, women's cross country, women's indoor track and women's basketball as well as a great football victory in the SBC Cotton Bowl over Texas A&M. Both baseball and softball advanced to the College World Series and we had Top 20 finishes in almost every sport.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Key Focus for the University of Tennessee athletic programs is to graduate student-athletes and prepare them for real-world experiences.
In 2004-05, 87 current and former Vols and Lady Vols graduated from the University of Tennessee, continuing Tennessee's athletics commitment to excellence in the classroom. This group boasts 49 SEC honor roll and 60 Thornton Athletics Student Life Center honor roll recognitions.
ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS
The University of Tennessee athletics departments had a great year, combining for an eighth-place finish in the 2004-05 Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings. It marked Tennessee's best showing in the 12-year history of the competition.
The Lady Vols were named the 2005 Southeastern Conference women's all-sports winner by the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group. All 11 sports sponsored by the UT women's athletics department advanced to their respective NCAA events. The men's department had eight of nine teams advancing to their respective NCAA events and seven of nine teams ranking among the top 20 in the country.
IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY
In the 2004-05 school year, more than 420 athletes volunteered a total of 2,800 hours for more than 90 different organizations in Tennessee and parts of the southeastern United States. Some of the community service projects that the student-athletes participated in this past year included: 400 Youth Turn Out For April Play Day; Student-Athletes Host Holiday Dinner; Football, Basketball Team Up For Second Harvest; and Vols' Freshmen Signal A Message.
IMPACT ON THE UNIVERSITY
Over the past year the University of Tennessee athletics department donated more than $24 million - directly or indirectly - as well as another $6.48 million in tuition payments back to the university for the 2005 fiscal year.
BUDGET FACTS
The University of Tennessee Athletics Department generated a cash profit of approximately $1.28 million in fiscal year 2005 for athletically-related operations before net transfers to support Knoxville campus programs of approximately $1.33 million in fiscal year 2005. As a result of these transfers back to the Knoxville campus, athletics sustained a $50,000 cash-basis loss in fiscal year 2005.
IMAGINE TENNESSEE
WOW. What a great year it has been. Start with Dr. John Petersen assuming the reins of the UT presidency and teaming with Knoxville chancellor Loren Crabtree to restore optimism and create new institutional momentum. Throw in championships in the fall in soccer, volleyball and women's cross country and top off autumn with Phillip Fulmer's eighth 10-win season in his 12 full years, including wins over Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Texas A&M. Head into winter and win a national championship in women's indoor track and score another Lady Vol Women's Final Four appearance while hiring a dynamic new "tournament proven" men's basketball coach, Bruce Pearl. Extend the year as long as you can, with softball and baseball both in their college world series events, men's tennis in the sweet sixteen, the best men's golf finish in 22 years and numerous track athletes earning national distinction. Top it off with 222 Vol and Lady Vol student-athletes earning a 3.0 GPA in the spring, including 35 members of the football team.
