VOLS FINISH IN SEVENTH PLACE AT ASHWORTH INVITATIONAL

The Tennessee men's golf team moved up three spots to finish in seventh at the Ashworth Invitational Tuesday. Played at North Ranch Country Club, in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The Vols shot a team scorecard of 296-297-287--880.
Pacing the Vols was Kingston native, Jonathan Mount. Mount shot a final-round score of 74 to finish at 6-over-par for the tournament. His scorecard of 75-70-74--219 was good enough for 18th place.
Ben Spickard had the strongest final round for the Volunteers. Spickard shot a tournament-best 4-under-par 67. After starting the day in a tie for 49th, his strong finish propelled him into a tie for 24th place.
Participating in his first tournament of 2006, Philip Pettitt finished next for the Vols. After shooting a final-round 3-over-par, he would finish the tournament with a scorecard of 77-71-74--222 and in a tie for 27th.
Lloyd Campbell was next for the Big Orange. The senior shot a 4-over par in the final round. Campbell finished the tournament at 12-over par and in a tie for 41st.
Charlie Ford rounded out the Volunteers lineup. Ford shot a final-round score of 72 to finish at 14-over par for the tournament. His scorecard of 74-81-7--227 put him in a tie for 48th.
Pepperdine won the team championship with a final round score of 281 and a tournament scorecard of 283-297-281--861. Southern Cal finished 9 strokes behind in second with a final team score of 870. Stanford shot a team score of 873 to finish out the top three.
Anthony Kim, of Oklahoma, retained his day-one lead and took home the individual championship. He went 9-under-par for the tournament. Seven strokes behind him in second place was Zack Miller, of Stanford, at 2-under par. Zack Byrd of Coastal Carolina, and Adam Porzak of Pepperdine, finished at 1-under and tied for third.
The Volunteers next compete Saturday and Sunday, March 18-19 at the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.
