With summer nearly at an end, Tennessee golfers tried to cram in as many top finishes on the links as they could before reporting back to campus for the fall season.
Five current Vols participated in amateur events both locally and abroad in the last week, finishing second in one event and posting two other top-10 finishes.
Two Vols, led by junior Philip Pettitt, wrapped up play on Friday morning in the final round at the Tennessee State Amateur Championship at Black Creek Club. Pettitt opened with a pair of 70s and finished with back-to-back 69s to finish alone in 14th place.
Incoming freshman David Holmes opened the event with an impressive four-under 68, but faded from contention with a second round 74. Holmes bounced back with a 70 in the third round and an even-par 72 on Friday to post a tie for 28th place.
The Vols were also well represented overseas this summer.
Two current UT golfers competed at the North of England Open Amateur Youths Championship at Middlesbrough Golf Club in England. The four-round event wrapped up on Thursday with both Vols finishing in the top six.
Junior Charlie Ford posted an eight-under 273 after four consecutive rounds under par to finish third, and sophomore Chris Paisley landed in sixth place four strokes behind Ford at 277 (-4).
Senior Tino Weiss posted a second place finish at the Omnium Suisse 2006 on July 30 at Waldkirch Golf Club in Switzerland. Weiss fired four rounds of 69 or better at the amateur stroke play championship, finishing at 264 and trailing only Stephen Rojas, who won the title by three strokes.
