Tennessee senior Tino Weiss has been named to the Swiss World Amateur Team, UT head coach Jim Kelson announced Thursday.
"There is no honor greater than being selected to represent a country in the World Amateur Golf Championships," Kelson said. "We are absolutely thrilled for Tino. He has worked exceptionally hard on his game over the past few years, and it is wonderful to see all of his hard work pay off."
Weiss, a senior on the 2006-07 squad, saw action in five tournaments for the Vols last season. He recorded a career-low 54-hole total of 218 at the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions. Weiss earned his best finish of the season, a tie for 35th at the 2006 SEC Championships, by firing a 69-74-76--219. He also tied his previous low round score of 69, attained at the 2004 Coca-Cola TOC. Weiss finished the 2005-06 season with a 75.00 stroke average.
The 2006 World Amateur Team Championships will be help in Stellenbosch, South Africa, Oct. 26-29. This year marks the first time the championships have been played in Africa.
Weiss and his teammates will compete against 74 teams from across the world for the prestigious Eisenhower Trophy. Teams will play 72-holes with the two lowest individual scores of each day becoming the teams' aggregate score. Each team consists of two or three golfers.
"I have been coaching for 18 years and have had just two players named to world amateur teams," Kelson said. "That gives some indication of the level of this achievement."
The Vols open their 2006-07 schedule Sept. 15-17, at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Dalton, Ga.
