The Tennessee men's golf team opens its 2006 fall season Friday in Dalton, Ga., at the Carpet Capital Collegiate. At last year's event, the Vols fired a 300-293-287--880 to finish tied for seventh.
The 54-hole tournament runs through Sunday and takes place at The Farm Golf Club, a par-72, 7,010-yard course.
The field for this 18th annual event includes SEC foes Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and Vanderbilt, along with ETSU, Georgia State, TCU, Texas Tech, Texas, Augusta State, Clemson, Duke, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech and North Carolina State.
Tennessee's lineup features Charlie Ford, Philip Pettitt, Chris Paisley, Ben Spickard and Tino Weiss.
Ford, a junior, leads the charge for UT. The Leicester, England native finished the 2005-06 season with a scoring average of 74.62 and set a career low-round of 67 at the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational in March.
Pettitt follows next for the Volunteers. A Murfreesboro native, Pettitt was a consistent No. 2 last season, turning in nine rounds of par or better and one top-10 finish.
Sophomore Paisley turned in a strong freshman year for the Vols, participating in seven events and finishing fourth on the team in scoring average.
Next for the Tennessee is Georgia native Spickard, who was the most consistent last season. Spickard competed in all 11 events in which the team participated.
Rounding out the lineup for the Volunteers is the senior Weiss. Weiss recently was named to the Swiss World Amateur Team set to compete in October.
Vol standout, Jonathan Mount was not released by doctors for competition after major knee surgery this summer. He is expected to play at the Shoal Creek Invitational Sept. 25-26 in Birmingham, Ala. Mount was the Vols' No.1 golfer last season, with three top-10 finishes and a stroke average of 72.48.
Competition begins Friday morning at 8:30 Eastern time. Teams play 18 holes Friday and Saturday, before the tournament concludes with 18 holes on Sunday. Live results are available at www.golfstat.com.
