Tim Kerin Sports Medicine Facility(NOTE: The facility is currently undergoing renovations and pictures will be posted upon completion.)The Tim Kerin Sports Medicine Facility is located inside the Neyland-Thompson Sports Complex, and is known to be one of the nation's top rehabilitation and athletic training centers. Named after the legendary former Head Athletic Trainer Tim Kerin, who passed away suddenly in 1992, the Sports Medicine Facility is considered the main hub for our student-athlete's medical needs, allowing our student-athletes to see experts in various medical fields (i.e.: Optometrist, Cardiology, Neurology, Dentistry, Podiatry, Dermatology, etc.). The Tim Kerin Sports Medicine Facility compromises 8,000 square feet of the most modern equipment available on the market. Tennessee's training facility is considered one of the most functional and comprehensive in the country; serving more than 300 student-athletes on 8 different Division I athletic teams. The Sports Medicine Facility is currently under renovations that are scheduled to be complete by the end of the 2007-2008 academic year. These renovations include: the addition of a physicians' suite, including X-Ray capabilities, the addition of state-of-the-art rehabilitation equipment, and many cosmetic upgrades. The University of Tennessee was the first collegiate training room to house an on site pharmacy, and has been a model for other sports medicine facilities nationwide. Around the country, there are only a handful of Sports Medicine Facilities that have an onsite State Licensed pharmacy to allow physicians immediate access to prescription medication. The Sports Medicine Facility allows our student-athlete daily and comprehensive access to world-class healthcare providers. Serving the student-athlete is, and has always been, our number one goal. Tim Kerin Memorial Food Drive"The Food Drive for Second Harvest has always been a worthy memorial to Tim Kerin's life and example," Tennessee head football coach Phillip Fulmer said. "Tim was always a part of projects for the betterment of the community. He made a difference in many ways." Kerin served as head trainer for 15 years until his sudden death from an aortic aneurysm in August of 1992. Tim's job description at Tennessee included a lot of territory, part of which was coordinating all the team's travel arrangements. However, his first priority of course, was the health and safety of literally hundreds of Vol athletes who looked to him for their training requirements. When Tennessee built the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center, Kerin designed the training facility, from the ground up, to specifically address the needs of Volunteer student-athletes. The state-of-the-art training room was officially dedicated "The Tim Kerin Training Room" in his honor and memory on November 26, 1993. In June of 1993, Kerin was inducted into the National Athletic Trainer's Association Hall of Fame for his outstanding career in the field and that same year the Tennessee Athletic Trainers Society selected Kerin as the Gene Smith/Mickey O'Brien College Athletic Trainer of the Year. Kerin was posthumously inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. Thomas "Tim" Kerin graduated from Westinghouse Memorial High School in Wilmerding, Pa., in 1965 and received his B.S. from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1969. After graduation, Tim began his professional career as the Head Athletic Trainer and a math instructor at Penn Hills High School in Pittsburgh. In 1972 Tim was awarded an M.S. in mathematics from Indiana University of PA and became Head Athletic Trainer and an associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh. He received an M.Ed. in Physiology of Exercise from that university in 1976. |
