Tennessee faces an uphill climb at the SEC Men's Golf Championship after carding a 17-over-par score in Friday's opening round.
The Vols combined for a 305 score and trail first-place Georgia by 23 strokes. UT finished ahead of only defending champion Alabama after 18 holes at Frederica Golf Club on St. Simons Island, Ga.
UT's scorers Friday in windy conditions were David Holmes at 3 over par, Chris Paisley at 4 over, Darren Renwick at 5 over and Robin Wingardh at 5 over. Cameron Lawrence finished with an 11-over 83 to round out the Tennessee fivesome.
Holmes opened with a 75 for the sixth time in his last seven tournaments. The Knoxville junior scattered four bogeys over the first 10 holes before registering birdies at the par-3 11th, par-4 13th and par-5 15th. Holmes finished his day with a pair of bogeys on the two closing holes.
Paisley's 76 was his highest opening-round score this season. In black numbers from the start, the senior from Newcastle, England, bogeyed his first four holes before rallying with three consecutive birdies on Nos. 6-8 to finish the front at 1-over 37. But Paisley doubled the 10th and converted just one more birdie, at 13, before bogeying 14 and 17.
Renwick also fired his highest first-round score of the season, a 77 that began bogey-bogey-double. But the Worthing, England, freshman steadied his game with a birdie-4 on the fourth hole and played 2 over par the rest of the way, bogeying just the par-4 12th and par-5 finishing hole at 18.
Wingardh's 77 matched his highest opening round of the season. The front nine was clean except for a bogey at the third, but the back side was a different story. A bogey at 10 led to a double bogey at 13 for the sophomore from Morarp, Sweden. Wingardh picked up two strokes with a sparking eagle on 15, but bogeys on his final three holes finished his round.
Lawrence was 3 over on the front, highlighted by a birdie at the par-5 seventh. He sandwiched bogeys at Nos. 3 and 5 around a double at the par-5 fourth. On the back nine, the Brentwood sophomore double bogeyed 11 and 18 to go with bogeys at the 10th, 14th, 16th and 17th holes.
Georgia owns an eight-shot lead over Arkansas, which fired a 2 over par 290. Florida and Vanderbilt are tied for third at 292, followed by Mississippi State and South Carolina in a fifth-place tie at 293.
All five of Georgia players recorded scores of par or better. Harris English, the 2008 SEC Freshman on the Year, and senior Brian Harman shot 2 under par 70 to pace the Bulldogs. Jordan Blann of Kentucky is the first-round individual leader at 5 under par 67. He holds a one-stroke lead over Florida's Billy Horschel and South Carolina's Mark Silvers III.
Tournament play resumes Saturday, with temperatures expected in the low 70s and lighter winds at 10 mph. Sunday's forecast also calls for excellent playing conditions for the final round of this 54-hole event.
