Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational

Vols Face Uphill Climb at South Georgia Tourney

Tennessee can't seem to shake its spring season doldrums on the golf course.
The Vols (299) are in 14th place after one round of the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational in Statesboro, Ga., ahead of North Carolina by a single stroke in a 15-team field loaded with SEC and regional competition. Darren Renwick and Jay Vandeventer led the UT effort with a pair of 2-over-par 74s.
Tennessee won twice in four fall tournaments but has finished fifth, ninth and 10th in three events since the mid-season break.
UT finished second here last year and still has two rounds left to climb back into this year's team race. The Vols trail first-round leader North Florida (285) by just 14 strokes. Virginia (286), Mississippi (287), Auburn (288) and North Carolina State (289) round out the top five.
What a difference a week made for both Renwick and Vandeventer. Last weekend in Las Vegas, the Vols pair shot 84-80 and 81-85, respectively, in their final two rounds to finish outside the top 60 individually.
Friday, both Renwick and Vandeventer were at 1 over par through 16 holes before each carded bogey at the 438-yard, par-4 17th. Renwick had birdies at the eighth, 14th and 15th holes, while Vandeventer birdied the fourth, 10th and 13th holes. The duo sits in a tie for 36th place.
David Holmes recorded 16 pars en route to a 3-over 75. His only blemishes were a double bogey at the par-5 seventh and a bogey at the par-3 13th. The senior captain sits in a tie for 52nd place.
Robin Wingardh rounded out the UT scoring with a 4-over-par 76. The junior was even par after his birdie at the 11th, but followed that with a double-bogey 7 and carded two more bogeys to fall in to a tie for 62nd.
Garrick Porteous shot 78 and is tied for 72nd place, while James Brannen is playing as an individual and recorded a 75. Each player birdied one hole -- Brannen the fifth and Porteous the 13th.
Tennessee begins play Saturday at 9 a.m., teeing off at Forest Heights Country Club's 10th hole. High temperatures in Statesboro are expected to reach the upper 70s, with winds less than 10 mph.
