Continuing Tennessee Athletics' commitment to excellence in the classroom, 48 Vol and Lady Vol student-athletes are among the University of Tennessee students participating in spring commencement ceremonies this week.
"These students have worked hard to reach this achievement and earn their degrees," said Eric Brey, director of the Thornton Center. "They now have earned the distinction of being University of Tennessee Alumni. We are very proud of their accomplishments."
Fifteen sports are represented as the Vols and Lady Vols walk across the stage and receive their diplomas. Among the graduates: middle linebacker Nick Reveiz, who was a key part of the Vols defense in the 2009 season; track and field standout Kimarra McDonald, a two-time SEC champion and All-SEC performer; JP Prince and Wayne Chism, who were part of the historical men's basketball squad that reached the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time in UT basketball history.
The graduates also include Terry Fair, a former Tennessee football student-athlete who returned to the university to complete his degree through the Renewing Academic Commitment program. Fair is a four-time football letterman who was named All-SEC in 1996 and 1997. The RAC program works with former student-athletes by assisting them with advice on remaining degree requirements, course scheduling, tutoring, employment and internship opportunities offered through the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, as well as use of the Thornton Center for their everyday needs.
Ceremonies for the various colleges begin Wednesday and continue through Friday. The commencement ceremonies take place at Thompson-Boling Arena and at the James R. Cox Auditorium inside the Alumni Memorial Building next to Neyland Stadium. Media interested in talking with any of the graduates are invited to attend the post-graduation reception for student-athletes, their families and coaches at the Thornton Center on Friday beginning at 11:30 a.m.
