LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Tennessee women's swimming and diving team defeated Kentucky and Indiana while the men's squad split results Friday in a double dual meet at Lancaster Aquatic Center.
Paced by junior Lindsay Gendron's three race victories, the Lady Vols (3-0, 1-0 SEC) won 11 events on their way to beating Kentucky 201-98 and Indiana 183-117.
The Vols (2-1, 1-0 SEC) earned an SEC opening victory against Kentucky 194-106 but lost to Indiana 183-117 as the Hoosiers took first in 11 events.
Gendron, who won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle and the 200 individual medley, was not the only multiple-race winner for the Lady Vols.
Senior Kelsey Floyd took the 100 and 200 butterfly in her hometown meet in Lexington. Sophomore Molly Hannis won the 100 and 200 breaststroke, and freshman Faith Johnson won her first two career races in the 50 and 100 freestyle.
"We had some outstanding swims today from some of our veterans as well as some of our freshmen," Tennessee head coach Matt Kredich said. "We also had some swims that seemed a little bit stuck in training mode. Kelsey Floyd, Lindsay Gendron, and Molly Hannis raced really well today."
Sophomore Tristan Slater led the Vols with three second-place finishes in the 200 butterfly, the 200 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley. Redshirt sophomore Troy Tillman picked up his first collegiate win in the 100 freestyle.
"We competed well today in spots," Kredich said. "There were some other races where we didn't put ourselves in position early in the race, and Indiana is way too good to let us get away with those mistakes. That being said, we're making progress."
Both the men and the women are back in action Oct. 25 in a home meet against Louisville. Admission is free.
INSIDE THE WOMEN'S RACES
Junior Lindsay Gendron helped lead the way for the Lady Vols by earning three victories for the Lady Vols in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races and the 200 individual medley.
Gendron won the 200 freestyle ahead of senior Kelsey Floyd in 1 minute, 46.30 seconds, and the 500 freestyle in 4:48.04. She led off a 1-2-3 finish for Tennessee in the 200 IM, finishing first in 2:02.67 followed by freshmen Anna DeMonte (2:05.76) and Amanda Carner (2:05.83).
In likely her last career meet in her hometown of Lexington, Floyd put together a strong performance in front of family and friends.
She picked up two individual victories in the 100 and 200 butterfly events, placed second in the 200 freestyle and also helped the Lady Vols a win in the 200 medley relay.
Freshman Faith Johnson starred in her first career individual races as a Lady Vol, sweeping first in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle. Johnson, rated among the nation's top incoming freestylers, won the 50 in 23.09 seconds and the 100 in 50.28. She was also second behind Floyd in the 100 butterfly in 56.08.
As usual, sophomore Molly Hannis earned the Lady Vols points in the breaststroke. The reigning SEC Champion in the 100 breaststroke, Hannis won the 100 breaststroke on Friday in 1:01.83 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:15.87.
Between Johnson and Gendron, Tennessee won four of the five women's freestyle races. The Lady Vols won 11 total events, including the 200 individual medley and 400 freestyle relays.
"Our freshman responded well to their first travel SEC meet," Kredich said. "Anna DeMonte and Amanda Carner are making great progress, and we're also excited about what Harper Bruens and Faith Johnson give us in terms of speed and versatility in the freestyles.
INSIDE THE MEN'S RACES
For the men, redshirt sophomore Troy Tillman was the Vols' only individual winner on the day, earning his first collegiate race victory in the 100 freestyle.
Tillman, who redshirted for the Vols last season, touched the wall in 45.68, improving his personal best by more than a second. Senior Ed Walsh took third in the race in 46.33.
Versatile sophomore Tristan Slater picked up three second-place finishes for the Vols in the 200 butterfly (1:52.28), the 200 breaststroke (2:05.99) and the 200 individual medley (1:52.82).
The Vols picked up steam at the close of the meet. Slater led off a 2-3-4 finish in the 200 IM. Freshman Ryan Signorin was third (1:55.98) and sophomore Drew Peterson took fourth (1:56.45).
Following the individual relay performance, Tennessee's team of Walsh, Samuel Rairden, Jacob Thulin and Tillman won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:01.29. Sean Lehane, Christopher Sadsad, Jimmy Dagley and Slater took third in 3:07.34.
"There were a few outstanding swims, notably from Troy Tillman in the 100, Sean Lehane in the 200 back, and from Ed Walsh and the rest of the guys in the 400 free relay," Kredich said. "We've got a lot to work on, but I'm also excited about the progress we've made so far this year."
INSIDE DIVING
In diving competition, Tennessee was led by seniors Jodie McGroarty and Brent Sterling, who recorded the team's top finishes in the four diving events.
"Overall, we had an up and down day," Tennessee diving coach Dave Parrington said. "Our seniors did a nice job ... When you face good competition like we did today, it really shows some things that need working on. Our most experienced divers had the fewest problems in those areas."
McGroarty finished second in the 3-meter springboard event (306.30) and third on the 1 meter competition (266.80). The 3 meter was a close competition with the top three divers finishing within three points of each other and Kentucky's Rebecca Hamerian winning in 298.35.
Reigning SEC Diver of the Year Tori Lamp finished fourth on the 3 meter (293.95) and sixth on the 1 meter (259.95). Freshman Samantha Lera was seventh on 1 meter (256.90) and eighth on 3 meter (261.80)
For the men, Sterling was second on the 3-meter springboard (361.75) and fourth on the 1 meter (330.60) in a field that featured three NCAA finalists from last year.
"The men had an outstanding field," Parrington said. "For Brent to finish the way he did on the 3-meter and the 1-meter, he really did a good job and I was happy."
Sophomore Mauricio Robles, last year's SEC Freshman Diver of the Year, was fifth on the 1 meter (312.30) and sixth on the 3 meter (325.55). Senior Jordan Mauney took seventh on the 1 meter (294.25) and eighth on the 3 meter (297.45).
