CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Tennessee rowing team posted four top-10 finishes at the Head of the Hooch Regatta on the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Tennessee placed two boats in the top-20 of the Championship 8+ with its "A" boat taking the fifth slot with a time of 16 minutes and 39.3 seconds, just over a second ahead of Conference USA foe Alabama. The Lady Vol "B" boat took the 14th spot with a time of 17 minutes and 6.2 seconds.
Head coach Lisa Glenn was very pleased with the championship 8+ competitors. In boat "A" Glenn explained, "we had a group of athletes who were able to remain focused together and follow through much better Saturday than in their previous two outings this fall. This is evident when comparing their result margins on crews they have raced previously, who also showed marked improvement."
The Orange and White novices also put two shells in the top-20 with their boat "A" placing 12th, crossing the finish line in 18 minutes and 54.5 seconds, ahead of Alabama who placed 13th with a time of 19 minutes and 5.7 seconds. Shell "B" completed the course in 19 minutes and 13.6 seconds placing 14th.
To close out Saturday the Lady Vols competed in the Championship 4+ race. Tennessee's "A" tied for fifth place with University of Texas at Austin with a time of 18 minutes and 26.3 seconds. The second boat in the top-20 was shell "B" completing the course in 18 minutes and 58.1 seconds allowing them to secure the 15th slot.
On Sunday, the Lady Vols competed in the pairs competition. "The format of the weekend limits us to only two entries on Saturday, but Sunday offers the chance to get more athletes some racing" stated Lisa Glenn. "It was good for those who were not able to race Saturday to go out and get some good racing experience on Sunday."
In the pairs race, two boats placed 16th and 17th, the orange and white completed the course in 21 minutes and 12.4 seconds and 21 minutes and 12.7 seconds respectively. Closing out the race shell "A" crossed the finish line in 24 minutes and 32.6 seconds placing 43rd.
In the final race of the fall season, the Lady Vols competed in the Open 8+ race. Crossing the finish line in 17 minutes and 24.4 seconds, shell "A" placed 7th. A tenth of a second behind, shell "B" placed 8th with a time of 17 minutes and 24.5 seconds. "We have much more work and preparation to do in order to be ready for our spring championship season" head coach Lisa Glenn said. "I am excited about what the team can take away from the fall experience and standings as we start the next phase of the year."
The Head of the Hooch was the final race for the Lady Vols in their fall season. The Orange and White will return to the water for competition in March against Minnesota on Lake Loudon in Knoxville.
