Newell Stands Out For Lady Vols

AUSTIN, Texas - On Monday, the Tennessee women's golf team got a shot in the arm from junior AJ Newell.
After two rounds of play, Newell leads the Lady Volunteers in Austin. The native of Tampa, Fla., carded a season-low round of 73 (+1) to head into the final round tied for 41st.
"I felt like I played solid like I did yesterday," Newell said. "I just cleaned up a few little things. I got a few more putts to drop and made a few birdies that helped me improve on my score from yesterday."
Newell remained relatively consistent throughout her day on the course, carding bogeys on holes two, nine and eleven while sinking birdies on holes eight and seventeen.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Lady Vols team struggled to get anything going at the University of Texas Golf Club. Tennessee is currently in 17th place after two rounds. Their rough play has led to a 31-over par two-day total with scores of 299 (+11) and 308 (+20).
Freshman Hannah Pietila followed up her excellent Sunday round of even par with a bogey-filled second round of 79 (+7). However, junior Mason Chen found some improvement on Monday, shooting a 75 (+3) that included a solid recovery from four consecutive bogeys. Two other Lady Vols carded rounds in the 80s.
"As a team, I think we are all looking forward to tomorrow," junior AJ Newell said. "We want to go out and fight for every stroke so we can move up the leaderboard and hopefully end this tournament on a more positive note."
Just as Newell said, the Lady Vols hope to climb their way back up the standings on Tuesday when they tee off at 8:15 a.m. CT. Tennessee will be paired with Furman and Tulsa in the final round of play.
