SAN ANTONIO, Texas - On Tuesday, the Tennessee women's golf team concluded its fall season with a 15th place finish at The Alamo Invitational. In a valiant effort, the Lady Vols were unable to mount a comeback on the final day at the Briggs Ranch Golf Course. The Big Orange's stay in Texas ended with a final round 305 (+17).
The Lady Vols' attempts to rekindle mojo from their 2009 Alamo Invitational championship were unsuccessful. Tennessee won the inaugural Alamo Invitational in a shortened tournament due to weather. UT's Nathalie Mansson captured the individual title.
In the midst of a six double bogey day, the Lady Vols found confidence in a season-best tournament from freshmen Lucia Polo and Teleri Hughes. Both ladies shot the lowest single round and 54-hole total scores of their career.
A native of Guatemala, Polo recorded a first round 72 (E) and carded her best 54-hole tournament total of 225 (+9). Polo capped off her first fall season on Rocky Top with three tournament starts, highlighted by a 19th place finish at the Mercedes-Benz Championship.
To conclude her first fall season, Hughes made her first career collegiate start and shot a first round 76 (+4). The Knoxville native finished the tournament with a total of 234 (+18) that included five birdies.
Senior Chessey Thomas and junior AJ Newell were the top finishers for head coach Judi Pavon. The Big Orange duo carded identical total scores of 223 (+7) and tied for 50th place. The Pietila sisters, Hannah and Emmie, rounded at the rest of the Tennessee lineup. Hannah Pietila finished 71st with a total of 230 (+14) while Emmie Pietila competed as an individual, finishing 68th with a total of 229 (+13).
The Lady Volunteers return to action in February when they travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico for the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.
