DALTON, Ga. -- The Tennessee men's golf team teed off its 2013-14 season in the rough. The Vols sit in a tie for 13th after the first round of play at the Carpet Capital.
The Farm golf course was not very kind to the young men from Big Orange Country. The Vols shot a first round score of 306 (+18) including six holes of double bogey or higher.
The day was particularly unkind to U.S. Amateur runner-up Oliver Goss. The Australian native got into some trouble on the front-nine, making the turn with a 42 (+6). Two birdies on the back-nine helped, but Goss still finished the first round with a 78 (+6).
With the Vols' No. 1 starter struggling, junior Thomas Dunne stepped up his game. The Ohio native sank four birdies during his first round to finish the day with a score of 74 (+2).
"The course has some birdies on it but there are also a lot of spots where par is a really good score," Dunne said. "You really just have to be patient out there with the greens as fast and undulated as they are."
Friday's first round saw the debut of head coach Jim Kelson's freshmen class, Jack Smith and Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara.
Smith excelled in his debut, leading the Volunteers with a first round 74 (+2). His first collegiate round of golf included two birdies, two bogeys, and one double bogey. Serrano competed at The Farm as an individual and struggled at times to find his game. The Mexico native finished his first round with score of 86 (+14).
Tennessee will have some major work to do to climb back into contention on Saturday. However, the Vol golf team is not ready to throw in the towel just yet.
"Obviously, we didn't have our best round today," Dunne said. "But we have put it behind us and be ready to have a really solid second round tomorrow."
On Saturday, Tennessee will start their second round at 9:20 a.m. ET when Talkington steps up to the 10th hole tee box. Tennessee will be paired with Chattanooga and the individual players.
