KNOXVILLE, Tenn.--Tennessee Swimming and Diving impressed in their first two home meets of the 2014-15 season, showing their competitive grit against four quality opponents, including several top-10 schools.
Their results caught the eye of the Southeastern Conference this week, as four members of the men's and women's teams were recognized Tuesday as a part of this week's conference awards.
Sam McHugh and Micah Bohon helped UT sweep the Freshman of the Week honors, while Molly Hannis' phenomenal start to her senior campaign earned her Female Swimmer of the Week. On the guys' side, Mauricio Robles' performances against some quality competition Friday earned him Male Diver of the Week. This is the second time being honored for both Robles and McHugh, while Bohon and Hannis earn awards for the first time.
Molly Hannis: Female Swimmer of the Week
The senior from Santa Rosa, Calif., earned her first SEC honor of the season after sweeping both the 100-yard (one minute, 0.31 seconds) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.23) against Auburn and Louisville Friday during UT's home double dual meet. This is the fourth time she has swept both events and has swam NCAA b-cut times four times in the 100 and three times in the 200. Hannis also swam the second leg for the winning relay team in the 200-yard medley relay and requested to swim the 200-yard individual medley, which she finished in second place (2:02.19) in her first time swimming the event this season.
Mauricio Robles: Male Diver of the Week
Robles once again led the way for Tennessee diving in their double dual meet against Auburn and Louisville Friday, winning the one-meter springboard competition (360.85) and finishing second in the three-meter (406.05). After qualifying for NCAA zones in his first meet against UNC-Wilmington, the redshirt junior has finished in the top-three in each of his one-meter events, while finishing no lower than second in his three-meter events. His 406.05 score is the third straight time that Robles has cracked the 400-point level on the higher springboard.
Sam McHugh: Male Freshman of the Week
During the last two weeks in which Tennessee has competed, McHugh has been named the Male Freshman of the Week, and for good reason. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native has now recorded 10 wins through his first five meets as a Vol, including a pair of wins against AU and UL. McHugh once again took first place in the 500-yard freestyle--his third time winning the event already--in 4:26.73. He also earned his first NCAA b-cut time in the 200-yard butterfly, which he won in 1:45.82. If that wasn't enough, McHugh now sits seventh in Tennessee school history with that time in the 200 Fly.
Micah Bohon: Female Freshman of the Week
Tennessee's fourth award of the week went to another UT debutante. Summerville, S.C.'s own, Bohon has established herself early on as a freshman which the women's team can rely on to score points in upcoming dual meets. She earned her first victory in the first 200-yard breaststroke she competed in at UNCW (2:22.34) and has also earned a pair of second-place results in the 200-yard freestyle. Against tough fields from Auburn and Louisville, Bohon swam career-best times in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.39), 200 Breast (2:20.34) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.34). She also swam her first-ever 50-yard freestyle leg as a Lady Vol. Her 23.45 split proved crucial to Tennessee's 150-150 tie with Auburn, as she and the UT B relay team earned third place to help UT take first and third in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
