Sam McHugh has had quite the start to his freshman campaign at the University of Tennessee.
Barely three months into his first season in Knoxville and McHugh has proven already to be quite the versatile and dangerous mid-distance swimmers in the country. While fans and teammates on Rocky Top have witnessed and experienced this fully already, the rest of the country has begun to take notice four meets in. Tuesday marked the latest edition of the SEC's Athletes of the Week and the male freshman of the week resides in East Tennessee.
"Sam McHugh is very professional," said Head Coach Matt Kredich. "He's been very well-coached and it seems like a seamless transition to college for him. He's pretty surgical in the way that he not only performs but prepares his races. He put together a pretty incredible 200 Fly, 500 Free and 400 IM."
The Chattanooga, Tenn., native has won eight races through the first four dual meets, over five different events. Against No. 8 Indiana and Kentucky, McHugh earned first place in the 500-yard freestyle (4:27.26), 400-yard individual medley (3:52.60) and 200-yard butterfly (1:46.72) and earned new career-best times in each event.
McHugh and the Vols will take to the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center on Nov. 14, when they host SEC rival Auburn and non-conference foe Louisville in another double dual meet this fall.
