CLE ELUM, Wash. - The Tennessee women's golf team shot a second round 317 (+29) on Friday to remain in 15th place. Through two completed rounds, the field continues to battle tough weather conditions at the NCAA West Regional. No team is under-par after 36-holes.
"Today, we played in very tough conditions as we did yesterday. It was cold and very windy to start the day," head coach Judi Pavon said. "Chessey [Thomas] and AJ [Newell] both had great front nines today but could not keep it going on the back nine. Tomorrow, we will just go all out and try to have a low round to see if we can sneak into the top 8. This is a tough course and anything is possible."
The Lady Vols fell eleven strokes behind their first round score of 306 (+18). After Saturday's final round, the top 8 teams at the Tumble Creek Club will advance to the NCAA Championships.
Washington native Chessey Thomas continues to lead the Lady Vols in her fourth NCAA postseason appearance. The senior has carded a two day total of 152 (+8) to sit tied for 38th place. The No. 1 starter has totaled seven birdies in the tournament.
Juniors AJ Newell and Mason Chen are tied for 74th place after 36-hole totals of 157 (+13). Newell recorded a second round of 78 (+6) while Chen carded an 82 (+10). Both players sank a birdie on No. 14 on Friday.
Competing in their first NCAA Regional, freshmen Hannah Pietila and Lucia Polo shot rounds in the 80s to round out the Lady Vols' lineup. Pietila slipped into a tie for 87th place after a second round 82 (+10) while Polo is tied for 100th place after carding an 80 (+8).
Tennessee will seek redemption in the final round of the NCAA West Regional Saturday at 3 p.m. (ET).
