BOSTON -- Tennessee Rowing opened the 2015 fall season by sending one boat to the 51st annual Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday in Boston.
Tennessee took ninth place in the women's championship 4+ division. The foursome of Kirsten Girard, Pari Baker, McDarragh Minnock and Badia Shehab finished the course in 19:03.296. Hannah Malzahn was the team's coxswain as the Volunteers finished ahead of 10 other teams in the event.
Tennessee defeated Miami and Yale by under five seconds. The Vols created that difference in the second split as Tennessee completed that section in 6:05.351 compared to times over 6:09 by both the Hurricanes and Bulldogs.
USA Women won the event with a time of 17:33.793. Only five universities finished ahead of Tennessee in the event. Brown topped all universities with a time of 18:05.230 followed by Virginia, Iowa, Notre Dame, Syracuse. New York AC and Don Rowing each finished in the top five overall in the race.
Girard, Baker, Shehab, and Malzahn are all freshman while Minnock is a redshirt senior.
Tennessee will send a contingent of their novice team to compete at the Secret City Head Race next weekend in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
