October 22, 2015 | Swimming & Diving
In addition to being named the SEC Swimmer of the Week, Tennessee sophomore Sam McHugh was named the CollegeSwimming.com National Swimmer of the Week on Wednesday.
McHugh collected the award after helping lead the Tennessee men (3-0, 1-0 SEC) to back-to-back road wins against Missouri and Virginia last week.
He won all six individual races he entered. Against Missouri, he won the 200-yard butterfly (1:38.76), 200 freestyle (1:38.76) and 200 individual medley (1:49.29). The next day at Virginia, he touched the wall first in the 200 butterfly (1:47.26), 500 freestyle (4:27.20) and 400 IM (3:52.39).
Not only did McHugh score big points for the Vols, he also earned recognition on the national stage. He is ranked in the NCAA top 10 in three races: fifth in the 400 IM and ninth in the 200 butterfly and 200 IM. His times in the 200 butterfly and 400 IM were NCAA b-cut standards.
