CARLSBAD, CALIF. -- Michael Nagy and Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara each shot 2-over and sit in a tie for 25th after the first round of the Gifford Collegiate at La Costa Monday.

Tennessee is in 11th following Monday’s round after posting a 12-over 296. Stanford and Washington are tied for the lead at 1-over par.

After bogeying three of his first four holes on the back nine to begin the round, Nagy responded with birdies on the 15th, 17th and 18th to move to even par after nine. He finished the round 2-over (73). His score of 73 matches his season best for a first round score.

Serrano played the back nine 2-over, but he posted a birdie on the par-4 2nd to get to 1-over. A bogey on his final hole of the day put him at 2-over (73).

Lorenzo Scalise shot a 3-over 74 with two birdies on the round. Senior Chad Merzbacher posted two birdies as well en route to his 5-over 76. Jack Smith shot a 7-over 78 with two birdies.

The Vols begin the second round Tuesday and will play alongside Wisconsin and Northwestern.
