CARLSBAD, CALIF. -- Tennessee moved up five spots after shooting a 5-over 289 in the final round en route to a ninth-place finish in the 11th Annual Gifford Collegiate in Carlsbad, Calif., Wednesday.
Michael Nagy led the final round surge, being only one of six individuals to shoot under par in the final round. His 1-under 70 led to a 4-over tournament score and finished in the top 25 for the first time this season.
In the first two rounds, Nagy struggled to post strong scores out of the gate, shooting 3-over on holes 10 and 11 in rounds one and two. He used that as motivation for his third round performance.
“I just got off to bad starts and put myself in a hole early, and it was a difficult golf course to make many birdies and get the shots back,” Nagy said. “Today, I dug deep and got off to a good start. I knew it was going to be a difficult day with winds up to 20 miles per hour, but I battled all day and played consistent.”
Junior Lorenzo Scalise was the top Volunteer in the tournament, finishing at 3-over. He posted a 1-over 72 Wednesday with one birdie and two bogeys. This marks the second consecutive tournament in which he has finished in a tie for 12th.
Chad Merzbacher finished the tournament at 11-over after shooting a 2-over 73 in the final round. He placed in a tie for 45th. Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara finished 65th with an overall score of 15-over after a 5-over final round. Serrano birdied three. Junior Jack Smith birdied two en route to a final round 3-over and finished 18-over (T-71).
Tennessee concludes its fall season with three top 10 finishes, including a third-place finish at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. Four individuals claimed top 25 finishes in the fall season—Chad Merzbacher (2), Lorenzo Scalise (2), Jack Smith and Michael Nagy.
The spring season begins with a trip to Ponte Verda, Fla., for the Sea Best Invitational Feb. 1-2.
