CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -- No. 10 Tennessee scored three runs from the fifth inning on, but the Lady Vols late rally against Utah fell short on Saturday in a 4-3 loss to the Utes in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Tennessee (11-2) bounced back late after committing three errors in the first two innings that put UT in a 4-0 hole. Utah (10-4) limited the Lady Vols to four hits.
Meghan Gregg hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and Taylor Koenig smacked a two-run shot in the sixth.
Erin Gabriel (3-1) took the loss after allowing two earned runs and striking out four over the first 3.1 frames. Rainey Gaffin struck out two over 3.2 shutout innings.
Katie Donovan (4-1) earned the win for the Utes after allowing three earned runs over seven innings.
Utah took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Dickman hit a double to center field and an error fielding the ball allowed a run to score. Two batters later, Kristen Stewart reached on at short, which allowed Dickman to score.
In the second inning, Shelby Pacheo scored on a triple by Dickman. Dickman scored on the play due to an errant throw from the shortstop.
