Lady Vol Golf Wins Big At Westbrook Invite
February 23, 2015 | Women's Golf
PEORIA, Ariz. -- The No. 12 Lady Vols won their first team tournament of the season and senior AJ Newell notched her first collegiate win at the Westbrook Spring Invitational. Tennessee's total of 851 (-13) marks the second best score after 54 holes in program history and third best in tournament history.
"Today was a great day," head coach Judi Pavon said. "Oregon played so well and was so tough out there. We didn't get off to a great start but again the players finished very strong and it made all the difference. They stayed patient and focused on doing their best and came out on top."
AJ Newell shot two rounds under par, including her final round of 69. Newell's total score of 210 (-6) matches the eighth best score after 54 holes in Tennessee program history. On day one, she shot rounds of 68 and 73, respectively. Her first round score tied for the ninth lowest first round score in UT history.
"I'm so thrilled for AJ," Pavon said. "She has been one of our most dedicated athletes and to see it pay off with a win to start her final semester is awesome."
Freshman Anna Newell recorded her third top-10 performance and second best with a tie for third place. She shot a final round of 72 (E) to match her second round score. Anna Newell finished the tournament with a total of 213.
Lucia Polo shot her best on day one with rounds of 71 and 70 but remained consistent to finish in the top-10 with a seventh place finish. Polo shot a final round of one-over 73. Despite recording a bogey on three of her first four holes, Polo finished with two birdies on the back nine for a total of 214 (-2).
Emmie Pietila made one of the most drastic surges up the standings, moving up 28 spots from day one. She recorded a career low round of 69 to improve on her first two rounds of 76 and 74. Emmie Pietila's strong play helped Tennessee to maintain its lead. She finished with a total of 219 (+3) for a three-way tie for 25th place.
Hannah Pietila shot a final round of 76 to finish in a tie for 43rd place. On day one, she shot scores of 71 and 75 to bring her total to 222.
"Both Lucia and Hannah had great tournaments, and Emmie came through in a huge way today with her career low round," Pavon added. "All in all, it was just a great weekend, and I'm so proud of them starting the spring on such a good note."
Entering day two, Tennessee had sole possession of first place. At one point during the final round, Oregon took the lead, but a strong finish by the Lady Vols cemented the win. Oregon came in second place with total of 854 (-10) and Notre Dame and College of Charleston tied for third place with scores of 868.
Next up, Tennessee will head to Hilton Head, South Carolina for the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, which runs from March 6-8.
