April 05, 2015 | Women's Golf
OXFORD, Miss. -- The No. 12 Tennessee women's golf team notched its sixth top-five finish of the season, finishing in third place at the Rebel Intercollegiate on Sunday. The Lady Vols completed play at the 54-hole event at 869.
"We played well today but not our best," head coach Judi Pavon said. "The other two teams played really well, so hats off to them. We didn't start well again but came back towards the end of the round."
No. 19 Texas A&M earned the win with a third round of 281 and a team total of 858. No. 18 Kent State had the best round of the tournament, 277, and finished in second place.
During the final round, the Lady Vols totaled 289, which included all five players carding birdies on the 13th hole.
"All five birdied on No. 13, a par four, which I don't ever remember happening in my career, so that was great," Pavon said.
Hannah Pietila led the Lady Vols in the final round with a comeback effort shooting two-under par for a score of 70 (-2). She carded two birdies and just one bogey on the day. Her total of 221 finished her in a tie for 18th place.
Individually, Lucia Polo led Tennessee. In the final round, she shot an even round of 72 to finish the tournament in a third-place tie with a total of 214 (-2). She shot twin scores of 71 (-1) in the first two rounds.
"Hannah came back today with a good round today," Pavon added. "Lucia had a great tournament this weekend."
Anna Newell shot a final round of one-over par. She finished in an 11th-place tie, her fifth top-15 finish of her freshman campaign.
Emmie Pietila finished in a 13th-place tie after carding a final round of 74. AJ Newell had a final round of 74 (+2) to conclude the tourney in a tie for 32nd.
Blakesly Warren concluded her first spring tournament in a 50th-place tie after carding a final round of 76 (+4).
The Lady Vols will now prepare for the SEC Championship, which is set to begin April 17-19 in Birmingham, Alabama.
