KAZAN, Russia -- Tennessee Aquatics' Alex Meyer and UT sophomore David Heron both finished in the top 10 Saturday in the 25K open water race at the FINA World Championships.
Meyer, a member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team, placed second in a time of 4 hours, 53 minutes, 15.1 seconds.
He had been going for his second gold in the event at the FINA World Championships, having won the 25K in 2010. Italy's Simone Ruffini finished less than five seconds ahead of Meyer to take the title.
Heron finished 10th in 5:00:11.5 to wrap up the international meet with two top-10 finishes. He had placed sixth in the 5K earlier in the meet.
Based on the men's and women's results over the last 10 days, the United States was awarded the trophy for the best open water team performance at the world championships.
