Vols Finish Weekend with 3-2 Win Over Clemson

ACC/SEC Challenge Match Play
- ACC- Duke defeats Kentucky, 3-2
- ACC- Florida State defeats Georgia, 3.5-1.5
- ACC- Louisville defeats Alabama, 3-2
- SEC- Vanderbilt defeats Virginia, 3-2
- SEC- Florida defeats Georgia Tech, 3-2
- SEC- Tennessee defeats Clemson, 3-2
KINGSTON SPRINGS, Tenn. -- Tennessee completed the weekend in the mid-state with a 3-2 match play win over Clemson as part of the DICK'S ACC/SEC Challenge Sunday.
Led by junior Jack Smith, who defeated Clemson's Bryson Nimmer 3 & 2, the Vols gained a match play win after finishing 12th in the stroke play portion of the challenge.
"I think the match play format suited us well," Smith said. "We played our best golf of the week today, so we can take a little confidence from that and figure out how to translate it into stroke play success."
The SEC and ACC split with each earning three wins. Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Florida won for the SEC, while Duke, Florida State and Louisville won for the ACC. However, the ACC claimed the challenge title as its individual representatives won 15.5 to 14.5.
Jack Smith Defeats Bryson Nimmer, 3 & 2
Smith earned Tennessee's biggest individual win of the day despite falling behind early. Starting on the back nine, Smith fell one back on the 10th hole after Nimmer birdied. Smith immediately squared the match up on the par-5 11th with a birdie of his own. Smith took the lead with a birdie on the par-4 13th and never lost control. He stretched the lead to four on three separate occasions before he won 3 & 2 on the 7th.
Michael Nagy Defeats Miller Capps, 2 & 1
Nagy never fell behind in his match win over Clemson's Capps Sunday. After both shot par on the opening par-3 10th, Nagy posted a birdie on the par-5 11th to take the lead. He reached a three-stroke lead on the 15th and held that lead through the second hole. Capps gained one stroke back on the third, then brought the match within one with a birdie at the 5th. Nagy responded with a par on the 6th to take the two-hole lead, which led to the 2 & 1 finish.
Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara Defeats Austin Langdale, 1 Up
Serrano battled from behind to earn his match play win Sunday. Serrano fell one behind on the 11th after a bogey. He squared the match up then took a one-hole lead on consecutive holes to end the back nine. Once he gained control on the 18th, he never lost the lead. Serrano pushed the lead to three holes and finished 1 up.
Stephen Behr Defeats Chad Merzbacher, 2 Up
The match played tight through the first five holes as neither golfer could budge from the other. Both players birdied the par-4 12th and par-3 14th to keep the match at all-square. Behr took the lead on the 15th with a birdie. Merzbacher managed to stay in the match and brought Behr's lead to one with a par on the 8th. Merzbacher was unable to win the final hole and was defeated 2 up.
Carson Young Defeats Lorenzo Scalise, 2 & 1
Scalise and Young were even for the first three holes with opening-hole birdies for each on the par-3 10th. Young took the lead with a birdie on the par-4 13th and never lost control form there. Scalise worked Young's lead to two with a birdie on the 6th, but he couldn't break the lead more as Young won 2 & 1.
