POSTGAME NOTES
Tennessee Tidbits
- #11/11 Tennessee outlasted the #25/20-ranked Georgia Bulldogs in a 34-31 final at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga.
- The Vols extended their winning streak to 11 games, the fifth-longest win streak in school history. It's the longest UT win streak since the Vols won 14 in row, spanning a 13-0 season in 1998 to a victorious first game in 1999.
- With the win, Tennessee has defeated ranked opponents in consecutive games for the first time since 1999 (No. 10 Georgia, Oct. 9; No. 10 Alabama, Oct. 23). The victory also marks UT's first win over ranked opponents in back-to-back Saturdays since 1995 (No. 18 Arkansas, Oct. 7; No. 12 Alabama, Oct. 14).
- UT is 5-0 to begin its season for the first time since 1998, and only the fifth time since 1970.
- The Vols are now 2-0 to begin Southeastern Conference play for the first time since 2003.
- Tennessee has won four of its last five games against ranked opponents.
- Butch Jones moved to 26-17 in his fourth year at Tennessee and is 76-44 in his 10th season overall.
- Tennessee improved its all-time record to 825-371-53, which stood as ninth place (in terms of win percentage) among FBS programs entering Saturday's game.
- Today's attendance at Sanford Stadium: 92,746.
Vol Captains/Coin Toss
- Head coach Butch Jones announced Tennessee's full-season captains at halftime of the 2016 DISH Orange & White Game. The appointed leaders are senior quarterback Joshua Dobbs, redshirt junior tailback Alvin Kamara, senior defensive back Cameron Sutton and senior linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin.
- The Vols have not had full-season designees since 2011, with captains named on a game-by-game basis from 2012-15.
- Tennessee won the coin toss and deferred to the second half.
- Tennessee is now 2-4 in coin tosses this season, include 2-3 pregame and 0-1 in overtime.
Series Notes
- Tennessee moves to 23-21-2 all-time in the series vs. the Georgia Bulldogs, including a 12-11-1 record in games played in Athens, Ga.
- UT won its second straight game vs. Georgia and recorded its first win in Athens since 2006.
- The Vols improved to 10-5 in games when both Tennessee and Georgia are ranked, as well as 9-2 when entering a Georgia matchup undefeated.
Tennessee Lineup News
- RS senior Kenny Bynum made his first start of the season at linebacker on the vs. Georgia, marking the first game of the season for the Vols to start a 4-3 defense. Bynum's last start at SAM linebacker came on Oct. 10, 2015, also vs. the Bulldogs at Neyland Stadium.
Offensive Highlights
- Tennessee now has scored in 277 straight games, which stood as the fourth-longest active streak in the NCAA entering the game against Georgia.
- UT furthered its streak to 20 consecutive games with a rushing TD, dating to 2014.
- With 230 passing yards vs. the Bulldogs, quarterback Joshua Dobbs became the sixth QB in Tennessee football history to record 5,000 career passing yards. He now has 5,227 career passing yards.
- Dobbs, who finished 16 of 26 for 230 yards with three TD passes and one interception, has thrown for at least one TD in each game this season.
- With a four-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter, Dobbs tied Jimmy Streater (25) for the most rushing TDs by a quarterback in school history.
- Jalen Hurd had 10 carries against the Bulldogs, surpassing Montario Hardesty (560) for the second-most carries in Tennessee history with 568.
- In his first start at WR since Sept. 10 vs. Virginia Tech, Josh Smith had two catches for 30 yards including a season-long 31-yard reception in the second quarter.
- Wide receiver Preston Williams hauled in a 19-yard reception in the second quarter, a season long catch for the sophomore.
- Dobbs connected with Jalen Hurd for a 19-yard touchdown pass to open the second half, marking the first touchdown for UT on a second-half opening drive this season.
- With his three TD passes vs. UGA, Dobbs moved into sole possession of fifth place for most career touchdown passes in UT history with 39, surpassing Andy Kelly, Heath Shuler and Jonathan Crompton (36).
- UT began the fourth quarter with a 16-yard touchdown reception by Alvin Kamara, narrowing the Vols' deficit to three points vs. Georgia. With the TD, Dobbs recorded his 14th career passing touchdown for UT.
- Down by three with four seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Dobbs completed a 43-yard Hail Mary pass to Jauan Jennings to give Tennessee a 34-31 victory as time expired.
- The Hail Mary pass completion clinched a fourth-career, fourth quarter comeback for Joshua Dobbs, as well as the third of the season for Tennessee.
Defensively Speaking
- Linebacker Colton Jumper led the Vols' defensive efforts, recording 11 total tackles with six solo tackles vs. the Bulldogs.
- With two sacks on Georgia's QB Jacob Eason, Derek Barnett moved into fourth place on UT's all-time sacks list, surpassing Todd Kelly Sr. (22.5) with 24. The sacks resulted in 2.5 tackles for loss for the Bulldogs, also moving Barnett past Eric Westmoreland (40) for the third-most career tackles for loss in Tennessee history with 40.5.
- With a 28-24 lead over Georgia in the fourth quarter, defensive back Malik Foreman intercepted a Jacob Eason pass to give UT the ball on its own 36-yard line with less than three minutes remaining in the game.
Special Teams
- Aaron Medley was 4-of-4 on PATs. He is now 118-of-119 for his career.
- Trevor Daniel averaged 35.8 yards on six punts, including two inside the 20. He now has 38 inside the 20 in his career and 28 kicks of 50 or more yards.
Upon Further Review
- An incomplete forward pass by Tennessee's Joshua Dobbs was reviewed in the second quarter vs. Georgia. Upon further review, the call on the field was upheld and Georgia received an illegal substitution penalty. (UPHELD)
