UT vs. Bama Postgame Notes
Tennessee Tidbits
- Tennessee moves to an all-time record of 825-373-53, which stood in ninth place (in terms of win percentage) among FBS programs entering Saturday’s game.
- The Vols are now 457-124-17 in their 95th season at Neyland Stadium.
- Butch Jones is now 26-19 in his fourth year at Tennessee and is 76-46 in his 10th season overall.
- UT is 2-10 all-time vs. No. 1 ranked teams.
- Peyton Manning was honored as the VFL Legend of the Game.
- Just over 200 VFLs returned to campus for today’s game, and they were welcomed back to Neyland Stadium as they ran through the “T” before the game.
- Today’s attendance at Neyland Stadium was a capacity crowd of 102,455, marking the second straight sellout at home and the sixth time in seven games the Vols had played in front of a crowd of more than 100,000.
Vol Captains/Coin Toss
- Head coach Butch Jones announced Tennessee’s full-season captains at halftime of the 2016 DISH Orange & White Game. The appointed leaders are senior quarterback Joshua Dobbs, redshirt junior tailback Alvin Kamara, senior defensive back Cameron Sutton and senior linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin.
- The Vols have not had full-season designees since 2011, with captains named on a game-by-game basis from 2012-15.
- Alabama won the coin toss and deferred to the second half.
- Tennessee is now 3-6 in coin tosses this season, include 3-4 pregame and 0-2 in overtime.
Vols-Crimson Tide Series Notes
- After 99 meetings, Bama leads the series, 54-38-7, after taking its 10th straight win over the Vols.
- Tennessee now stands 20-25-1 vs. Alabama in Knoxville.
- UT faced a No. 1-ranked Crimson Tide squad for the third time in the past five seasons.
- The margin of victory by Alabama in today’s 49-10 victory (39) was the most in the series since 1906 (51-0).
Tennessee Lineup News
- Redshirt junior wide receiver Jeff George got his first career start.
- Today marked the second time ever that running backs Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara started together in the backfield.
- Junior linebacker Elliott Berry, freshman cornerback Baylen Buchanan, redshirt freshman left guard Venzell Boulware and sophomore defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie got their first career starts today.
- Freshman offensive lineman Marcus Tatum made his first appearance as a Vol, seeing action at right tackle.
Offensive Highlights
- Redshirt junior running back Alvin Kamara carded his third rushing touchdown of the season and 10th of his career midway through the second quarter, punching it in from seven yards out to help UT capitalize on an Alabama fumble.
- With 28 yards on 13 carries, Jalen Hurd moved past Jay Graham (2,609, 1993-96) into seventh at UT in career rushing yards. Hurd now has 2,622 yards and is just shy of Cedric Houston (2,634, 2001-04) and Jamal Lewis (2,677, 1997-99).
- Josh Malone led Tennessee in receiving with a career-high-tying five receptions for 61 yards. He also had five catches vs. Ohio on Sept. 17.
- Tennessee now has scored in 279 straight games, which stood as the fourth-longest active streak in the NCAA entering the game against Alabama.
- Today marked the first time this season Joshua Dobbs was unable to record a passing touchdown.
- UT furthered its streak to 22 consecutive games with a rushing TD, dating to 2014.
Defensively Speaking
- Junior defensive end Derek Barnett came up with a huge sack midway through the second quarter, taking down Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts for a 14-yard loss and forcing a fumble. It was Barnett’s sixth sack this season and 26th of his career.
- Barnett is now all alone at third for career sacks at UT, trailing Leonard Little (28, 1995-97) and Reggie White (32, 1980-83).
- Sophomore defensive lineman Quay Picou pounced on Hurts’ fumble at the Alabama 11. The Vols would score two plays later on an Alvin Kamara seven-yard TD run.
- Derek Barnett recorded his first career interception at a key point in the game. With Alabama leading 21-7 and driving deep into Tennessee territory late in the second quarter, Shy Tuttle deflected a Jalen Hurts pass, and Barnett was there to pick it out of the air and keep UT within 14 entering the half.
- Barnett’s interception was the first by a Vol defensive lineman since Jacques Smith had one vs. Auburn in 2013.
- Safety Todd Kelly Jr. recorded a career-high 11 tackles, including seven solos, to pace the Vol defense.
- Junior linebacker Elliott Berry recorded a career-high nine tackles and two tackles for losses today. He already had seven tackles and a TFL by halftime.
- Freshman cornerback Baylen Buchanan also posted a career high with eight tackles, six of them solos.
- Emmanuel Moseley tied his career high with eight stops vs. Alabama, including three tackles for losses.
Special Teams
- Alvin Kamara fielded JK Scott’s booming 62-yard punt at his own four in the first quarter and returned it 32 yards to the 36 to set the Vols up with good field position. It was the second-longest of his career behind a 50-yarder vs. Western Carolina last season.
- Kamara added a 28-yard punt return late in the first quarter.
- Evan Berry moved into third on Tennessee’s career kickoff return yards list, surpassing Devrin Young (1,543, 2011-14). Berry entered the game needing 84 to pass Young, and he finished with 91 yards on three attempts to move his career totals to 1,551 yards on 47 returns.
- Eddie Jackson’s 79-yard punt return for a touchdown was the first allowed by UT since Georgia’s Reggie Davis returned one 70 yards on Oct. 10, 2015.
- Aaron Medley was one-of-one on field attempts Saturday, drilling a 37-yarder in the third quarter. He stands six-of-eight this season and 47-of-65 for his career.
- Medley was one-of-one on PATs. He is now 124-of-125 for his career.
- Trevor Daniel averaged 48.3 yards on 10 punts, booming four of 50 or more yards with two off those traveling 60 yards. He now has 12 this season and 34 for his career traveling 50 yards or farther.
- Daniel had three punts downed inside the 20, running his number to 18 this season and 43 for his career. One of those punts was inside the 10, upping his total to eight this season and 23 for his career.
