Volleyball Loses at Mississippi State, 3-0

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The Tennessee Volunteers lost to Mississippi State 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-23) on Sunday at Newell-Grissom Building.
Sophomore Erica Treiber and senior Bri Holmes finished with seven kills each to lead Tennessee (13-8, 3-5 SEC), with Treiber also adding four blocks. Sophomore Brooke Schumacher had 10 digs.
Mississippi State (12-11, 4-6) turned the tide of a back-and-forth first set with a 3-0 run at the midpoint to go ahead 16-14. The Bulldogs led the rest of the way, using a 4-0 run to pull away 23-18 and closed out the set 25-21, hitting .440 for the set.
In the second set, the Bulldogs won 10 of 13 points to push ahead 16-9 and lead the rest of the way. The Vols closed the lead to 19-16 on a kill by Bri Holmes, but Mississippi State answered with a 3-0 run. The Bulldogs caught another 3-0 run to end the set 25-18.
The Vols came out of the break with a new-look lineup with four different players from the starting lineup. While Tennessee led 9-6 early, most of the set was back and forth with 11 ties and three lead changes.
Freshman Breana Jeter tied the match 23-23 with a kill on the outside, but MSU won the last two points on Tennessee errors, getting a block on set point to take the match 25-23.

- Tennessee starters: Sedona Hansen, Bri Holmes, Raina Hembry, Erica Treiber, Kanisha Jimenez, Britney Vallez and Brooke Schumacher as libero.
- Breana Jeter started in the third set to become the seventh Vol to make her SEC debut this season. She finished with a career-best two kills and her first college block.
UP NEXT
- The Vols have split home and away weekend with a Friday road match at Alabama at 7 p.m. Eastern and a home match against Auburn on Sunday.
- It will be the first and only time the Vols play either team this year.
