POSTGAME NOTES
Tennessee Tidbits
- Tennessee improved to an all-time record of 826-374-53, which stood in ninth place (in terms of win percentage) among FBS programs entering Saturday's game.
- The Vols are now 458-124-17 in their 95th season at Neyland Stadium.
- Butch Jones raised his record to 27-20 in his fourth year at Tennessee and is 77-47 in his 10th season overall.
- Jones is now 13-3 in non-conference game at UT.
- Tennessee, now 6-3 overall and 2-3 in the SEC, became bowl eligible for the third consecutive season and reached that point during a Homecoming game win for the second straight year.
- The 6-3 start ties for the program's best record after nine games since 2007.
- The 55-0 triumph provided UT the largest margin of victory since the Vols defeated Western Kentucky, 63-7 (56 points), on Sept, 2009.
- UT improved to 14-1 in games televised by the SEC Network.
- Today's attendance at Neyland Stadium was 98,343.
Vol Captains/Coin Toss
- Head coach Butch Jones announced Tennessee's full-season captains at halftime of the 2016 DISH Orange & White Game. The appointed leaders are senior quarterback Joshua Dobbs, redshirt junior tailback Alvin Kamara, senior defensive back Cameron Sutton and senior linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin.
- The Vols have not had full-season designees since 2011, with captains named on a game-by-game basis from 2012-15.
- Tennessee Tech won the coin toss and deferred to the second half.
- Tennessee is now 4-7 in coin tosses this season, including 4-5 pregame and 0-2 in overtime.
Homecoming Notes
- The Vols hosted their 93rd Homecoming game in a year that the University of Tennessee is celebrating its 100th Homecoming.
- Tennessee now is 71-19-3 all-time on Homecoming and has won its past three Homecoming contests as well as 30 of its past 33.
- UT is 45-15-3 when the Homecoming game is played in November.
- The Vols secured their second-straight Homecoming shutout, as they defeated North Texas 24-0 last season.
- UT scored the most points in a Homecoming game since racking up a 56-28 win over Memphis on Nov. 7, 2009.
- Tennessee managed its 19th all-time shutout of a Homecoming opponent and third in the past six years.
Vols-Golden Eagles Notes
- This marked the sixth meeting between Tennessee and Tennessee Tech, with the Vols moving to a 6-0 lead in the series.
- This marked the first time these schools met on the gridiron since UT won, 68-0, in 1951.
- In their sixth all-time meeting, Tennessee shut out the Golden Eagles for the fourth time in the series.
Tennessee Lineup News
- Tennessee started its fifth different offensive line combination this season, with Brett Kendrick at left tackle, Jashon Robertson at left guard, Coleman Thomas at center, Dylan Wiesman at right guard and Chance Hall at right tackle.
- Sophomore Kyle Phillips recorded his first career start, opening at defensive tackle.
- The Berry twins, linebacker Elliott and free safety Evan, started a game together for the first time. Their birthday was Friday.
- With the margin greatly in Tennessee's favor from the first quarter on, numerous reserves saw extensive, valuable playing time on Saturday.
Offensive Highlights
- Tennessee was efficient on offense, possessing the ball for only 18 minutes, 44 seconds compared to 41:16 for Tennessee Tech.
- Senior quarterback Joshua Dobbs didn't waste time in notching his career best for touchdown passes in a season, connecting with junior receiver Josh Malone 57 seconds into the game on a 30-yard strike. His 16th TD pass topped last season's total of 15.
- Dobbs added another 43-yard strike to Malone in the first period and a three-yarder to Jauan Jennings in the second stanza to run his 2016 total of TD tosses to 18. He now has 15 multi-touchdown passing games.
- For Malone these were his sixth and seventh touchdown receptions of the season.
- Jennings hauled in his fifth TD catch of the year.
- With seven TD receptions on the season, Malone has the most by a Vol receiver since Justin Hunter had nine and Zach Rogers had seven in 2012.
- Malone finished with five catches for 112 yards, all in the first half.
- True freshman wide receiver Brandon Johnson had career highs of five catches and 64 yards as Tennessee's second-leading receiver on an evening when the Vols featured 11 different players catching passes.
- Dobbs surpassed 6,000 yards passing in his career, becoming only the sixth Tennessee signal-caller to eclipse that total. He now stands at 6,061.
- Dobbs has accounted for 71 career touchdowns, moving past Tyler Bray into third place in Tennessee history.
- Dobbs finished the first quarter nine-of-nine passing for 159 yards. He completed 11 in a row until a toss to Tyler Byrd was broken up with 7:51 remaining in the second period. The senior finished the game 12-of-13 for 183 yards and three scores.
- Reserve quarterback Quinten Dormady completed 9-of-13 passes for 109 yards, meaning Tennessee had two quarterback throw for more than 100 yards.
- Redshirt freshman Sheriron Jones also saw his first-ever duty at quarterback in the fourth quarter, finishing 1-of-1 passing for two yards to lift the UT quarterbacks' tally to 22-of-27 on the night for 294 TDs and three scores with no interceptions.
- The last time UT had a pair of QBs eclipse the century mark in passing during the same game was on Oct. 30, 2010, vs. South Carolina, as Tyler Bray (159) and Matt Simms (153) accomplished that feat.
- Scoring a touchdown in 57 seconds on its opening drive, 43 on the second possession, 13 on its third drive and 52 early in the third quarter, Tennessee carded the eighth, ninth, 10th and 11th TD drives of less than a minute during the 2016 season.
- Running back John Kelly had a 73-yard touchdown run, the longest of his career and the longest of the Butch Jones era.
- Kelly finished the day with a career-high 104 yards (his first 100-yard game) on seven carries and one score. His previous best was 94 yards vs. South Carolina last Saturday, meaning he has rushed for 198 yards over his past two games on 21 carries for a 9.4 yards per carry average.
- Tennessee scored 21 points in the first quarter against the Golden Eagles. The Vols had entered the game scoring a combined 24 points in the first quarter all season long.
- The Vols led 38-0 at the half, marking the most points in a first half since tallying 41 last season vs. Western Carolina.
- True freshman running back Carlin Fils-aime carded his first career touchdown, powering in from two yards out with 4:23 to go in the first half. He added his second score of the game on a one-yard plunge with 12:50 remaining in the third quarter.
- Tennessee was 4-of-8 on third down conversions and was 4-of-4 in the red zone.
- UT furthered its streak to 24 consecutive games with a rushing TD, dating to 2014. The streak now stands as the second-longest active streak in FBS, trailing only Alabama (28) entering Saturday's contest. Tennessee tied its school record for most consecutive games with a rushing score at 24, established during the 1937-39 seasons.
- The Vols have now scored in 281 straight games, which stood as the fourth-longest active streak in the NCAA entering the game against Tennessee Tech.
Defensively Speaking
- The Tennessee defense pitched its first shutout since a 24-0 blanking of North Texas in the last Homecoming game on Nov. 14, 2015.
- It was the largest shutout victory since Tennessee rolled past Vanderbilt, 65-0, on Nov. 26, 1994.
- The Vols held Tennessee Tech to a scoreless first quarter, marking the first time all season UT had blanked an opponent in the opening stanza. The last time UT held an opponent scoreless in the initial quarter was vs. Northwestern in the Outback Bowl last season.
- Tennessee held a foe scoreless in the first half (38-0) for the first time since blanking Missouri in the opening 30 minutes in Columbia last season.
- UT held the Golden Eagles to minus six yards rushing and 58 total yards in the first quarter. Tennessee Tech was limited to 224 for the game, with only 60 coming on the ground.
- Junior linebacker Cortez McDowell recorded his first career interception and added an 18-yard return in the third quarter, helping send TTU to 0-for-4 on fourth down attempts at that point in the game. The Golden Eagles would finish the contest 1-for-8. Tech also was 6-of-19 on third down tries.
- Tennessee finished the game with 13+ tackles for losses, with 16 different players in on stops behind the line of scrimmage.
- Four of those were sacks, with Corey Vereen (1.0), Marquill Osborne and Dimarya Mixon getting solos and LaTroy Lewis and Kendal Vickers sharing one.
- The Tennessee defense also had seven quarterback hurries, led by redshirt freshman Darrell Taylor with three.
- True freshman defensive back Nigel Warrior posted a team- and career-high seven tackles, including six solos, while adding a tackle for a loss.
Special Teams
- True freshman Tyler Byrd opened the game with career-long 31-yard kickoff return.
- True freshman Marquez Callaway returned a punt 52 yards, on his first-ever try, to set up the Vols for a short touchdown drive early in the third quarter.
- Callaway added a 62-yard punt return for a touchdown, on his second-ever attempt, with 2:54 to go in the game, finishing with 114 yards on two runbacks.
- Callaway's punt return for a touchdown was the first by a Vol since Cameron Sutton took one back 85 yards vs. Vanderbilt on Nov. 28, 2015.
- Aaron Medley was six-of-six on PATs against Tennessee Tech. He is now 36-of-36 this season and 133-of-134 for his career.
- Redshirt junior Holden Foster kicked his first career PAT, adding the finishing touches on the final score.
- Medley closed out the first half with a 19-yard field goal to put UT up 38-0 at the break. He added a 42-yarder in the fourth quarter. He is now 8-of-11 on the season and 49-of-68 for his career.
- Trevor Daniel averaged 45.7 yards on three punts, booming one 57 yards. He now has 37 punts of 50-or-more yards, including 16 this year. He also placed one inside the 10, running his total in that category to 11 this season and 26 for his career.
Upon Further Review
- Yeedee Thaenrat of TTU was credited with a pass reception and fumble, which was recovered by Tennessee's Nigel Warrior and returned 10 yards. The play was reviewed and overturned.
- Tennessee Tech defensive back Maleek Hall was flagged for targeting on a hit on Tennessee's Tyler Byrd. The play was reviewed and overturned.
- Officials ruled that Tennessee Tech quarterback Colby Brown fumbled and Tennessee recovered. The play was reviewed and overturned.
