WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Tennessee sits atop the leaderboard after shooting an overall 4-over 284 in the first round of the Kingsmill Intercollegiate Sunday.

Despite temperatures below 50 degrees and rain looming over course, the Vols endured the difficult conditions, holding a three-stroke lead over No. 26 Penn State and Dayton at 7-over. Tennessee's 284 team score marks the second-best opening round of the season. The team opened with a 282 at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate March 4.

Individually, Chad Merzbacher and Lorenzo Scalise are tied for third place after carding 1-under 69s. Merzbacher finished with four birdies in the round and scored 2-under on par-5 holes. The senior has scored in the 60s for two consecutive rounds of competition and opened with a round in the 60s for the second time this season.

Scalise impressed in the first round for the second straight tournament with his 69. In his last competition, he carded a 67 in the first round.

Freshman Nicklas Mattner and senior Michael Nagy both finished the first round with 3-over 73s. Nagy led the Big Orange in birdies with five.

Chad Merzbacher aims for his fifth overall and third consecutive top-10 finish of the season.

This marks the first time this season that Tennessee has led a tournament at the conclusion of any round.
