Mattner, Scalise End Day in Top 10 at the Desert

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Nicklas Mattner and Lorenzo Scalise finished the opening day in the top 10 as they paced the Vols on the course Saturday at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The reigning SEC Freshman of the Week, Mattner continued his success Saturday with rounds of 71 and 70, placing him in a tie for third heading into the final round. Mattner birdied six in the second round, marking the most carded birdies of any round this season for the German.
Scalise, the lone sophomore on the team, is also in the top 10 heading into the final round in large part due to his first-round 67. The Italian's consistency throughout the round paced him, birdying five while playing bogey-free. He was in a tie for the lead early in the second round, and he sits in a tie for eighth after Saturday's rounds.
The Vols carded a 282 and 292 in the first and second rounds, respectively, and finished the opening day in fourth place. The Big Orange held the lead at one point during the opening round.
Junior Jack Smith is competing as an individual in the Desert Mountain and carded a 1-under 71 in the second round. Pairing his 71 with his opening round 72 puts him in a tie for 13th.
Chad Merzbacher posted a 2-over on opening day and is tied for 29th, while Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara s 3-over after two rounds and in a tie for 32nd. Michael Nagy is 6-over and tied for 44th.
What Happened in the First
Tennessee checked in at third place after shooting an opening round 6-under 282, marking the second-best team round of the season. The Orange and White trailed only Texas A&M (-11) and Michigan (-10) after the morning session.
Scalise's 5-under 67 positioned him second in the tournament after the first round. The five birdies marked the most by a Vol in the opening round.
Mattner began the tournament with an eagle on this first hole of the day, the par-5 16th. He followed that with birdies on three of the next four holes to reach 4-under. He finished the first round in a tie for 19th with a 1-under 71.
Guevara also carded a 1-under 71 in the first round, birdying four, including the last two holes of the morning session.
Smith shot an even par 72 and finished the first round in a tie for 25th. Merzbacher carded a 1-over 73, while Nagy finished the first round with a 4-over 76.

Final round play at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate begins Sunday morning. Tennessee will be paired with Purdue and St. Mary's (Ca.). Tennessee's tee times are below (all times ET/MT).
