Rowing Takes First and Second at Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Tennessee Rowing's top boat took second place in the Grand Finals while the V4+ claimed first place in the Petite Final as UT wrapped up competition at the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday.
After winning their heat yesterday, Tennessee's V8+ posted a time of 7:19.547 to finish in second in the Grand Finals of the Women's Collegiate Varsity Race. Miami won the Cal Cup with a time of 7:11.845. Tennessee topped Loyola Marymount (7:22.642) and San Diego State (7:27.069) as well as Big 12 Conference foes Old Dominion (7:26.306) and Kansas State (7:27.084). Harper Lucas coxswained the crew of Kirsten Girard, Pari Baker, McDarragh Minnock, Natalie Tavares, Kathryn Cosgrove, Erin Gibbemeyer, Gina Michael and Nicole Chojnacky.
The V4+ boat captured the Petite Final with a time of 7:50.443. UT cleared the field by more than four seconds over second place and 18th ranked Gonzaga (7:54.638) and almost 15 seconds over Sacramento State (8:05.089), UC San Diego (8:08.991), Kansas State (8:21.995) and Saint Mary's (8:23.667). The V4+ took third place in Heat C yesterday to qualify for the Petite Final. Jennifer Davis was at the helm alongside Jesselyn Voysey, Lauren Higdon, Victoria Hamby and Kaitlyn Wallace.
Tennessee's 2V8+ finished in third in the Petite Final of the Women's Collegiate 2V race. The Vols mounted a late charge which led to an exciting finish. UT posted a time of 7:02.176 which only trailed San Diego (6:58.659) and #20 UCLA (6:59.147), but topped British Columbia (7:09.643), Sacramento State (7:11.615) and Kansas State (7:16.325). Taylor Upson coxswained the crew of Chandler Frumin, Morgan Suffridge, Badia Shehab, Katherine Pearson, Katie Porter, Aja List, Katie King and Nicole Burnett.
"The team made great use of our trip to San Diego," Head Coach Lisa Glenn said. "We are encoraged by the progress we are making as a team, and we are excited about the next steps we will take in preparation for our next competition."
The Vols will return to action in two weeks at the Clemson Invitational on April 16th and 17th in Clemson, South Carolina.
