KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Head women's golf coach Judi Pavon, sophomore All-American golfer Anna Newell, UT Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Dave Hart, and head baseball coach Dave Serrano conducted separate media availabilities on Thursday at the Ray & Lucy Hand Digital Studio.
Pavon and Newell appeared at the podium fresh off this week's NCAA Women's Golf Championship, where Newell finished in fourth place.
As a team, Tennessee fell two strokes shy of qualifying for the fourth round of stroke play at the NCAA Women's Golf Championship last weekend, posting a 54-hole score of 885 to place 16th.
Competing in the final round of the Championship as an individual, Newell posted a 71 (-1) to finish the tournament tied for fourth place. The finish not only marks Newell's sixth top-10 finish of the season, but also just the Volunteers' third top-five finish at the NCAA Championship in program history. Additionally, her placement is the best by a Tennessee golfer. Young-A Yang and Jessica Shepley carded fifth-place finishes in 2001 and 2004, respectively.
Following Newell's fourth-place finish at the NCAA Golf Championship, the sophomore was named a Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) First Team All-American. Newell is the fourth Vol to earn First Team honors and the first since VFL Erica Popson earned the distinction in 2011.
The Tampa, Florida, native led the Volunteers with a 72.36 average over 36 rounds this season. Additionally, she carded top-25 finishes in all 12 tournaments of 2015-16. Six of her placements were in the top-10, including a first-place finish at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in the fall.
Hart followed Pavon and Newell at the podium, most notably announcing a one-year extension for head baseball coach Dave Serrano. At the conclusion of Hart's comments, Serrano addressed the media.
