POSTGAME NOTES
Tennessee Tidbits
- Tennessee improved its all-time record to 822-371-53, standing in ninth place among FBS programs.
- Tennessee improved to 107-57-4 all-time in night games.
- The Vols extended their winning streak to eight games. It’s the longest UT win streak since the Vols won 14 in row, spanning a 13-0 1998 season to a victorious first game in 1999.
- UT is one of just three schools (Alabama-14, San Diego State-11 (pending tonight’s game vs. Cal), Tennessee-8) with active win streaks of six or more games.
- Butch Jones improved to 23-17 in his fourth year at Tennessee and is 73-44 in this 10th season overall.
- Butch Jones improved to 61-5 in his career when leading at halftime.
- The Vols are now 39-16 in neutral site games.
Largest Attendance In College Football History
- A crowd of 156,990 was in attendance, setting a record for most fans ever at a college football game.
- The previous NCAA attendance record was 115,109 for the Notre Dame at Michigan game on Sept. 7, 2013.
- The biggest crowd Tennessee had played in front of prior to tonight was 109,061 for the UT-Florida contest in Neyland Stadium on Sept. 18, 2004.
Vol Captains/Coin Tosses
- Head coach Butch Jones announced Tennessee’s full-season captains at halftime of the 2016 DISH Orange & White Game. The appointed leaders are senior quarterback Joshua Dobbs, redshirt junior tailback Alvin Kamara, senior defensive back Cameron Sutton and senior linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin.
- The Vols have not had full-season designees since 2011, with captains named on a game-by-game basis from 2012-15.
- UT’s honorary coin toss representatives were Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and UT alum and NFL legend Peyton Manning. Virginia Tech’s representatives were NFL great Bruce Smith and former Hokies coach Frank Beamer.
- Tennessee won the coin toss and deferred until the second half.
- Tennessee is now 1-2 in coin tosses this season, include 1-1 pregame and 0-1 in overtime.
Series Notes
- This was the ninth overall meeting between Tennessee and Virginia Tech, and the Vols have a 6-3 series lead.
- The Vols have played every current member of the ACC, compiling a 105-61-7 against the league.
- In his fourth season as UT’s head coach, Jones is 13-3 against non-conference opponents.
First Game Action As Vols
- Five players made their playing debuts as Vols vs. Virginia Tech, including true freshmen Carlin Fils-Ame and Taeler Dowdy, redshirt freshmen Venzell Boulware and Darrell Taylor, and transfer Alexis Johnson.
- Six freshmen saw duty in the opener vs. Appalachian State for UT, including four true freshmen (Marquill Osborne, Nigel Warrior, Tyler Byrd and Baylen Buchanan) and a pair of redshirt freshmen (Drew Richmond, Eli Wolf).
Offensively Speaking
- Tennessee now has scored in 275 straight games, which is the fourth-longest active streak in the NCAA.
- UT ran its streak to 17 consecutive games with a rushing TD, dating back to 2014.
- After trailing 14-0 after the first quarter, Tennessee scored 31 unanswered points, including a 24-point second quarter. After being outgained in yardage, 204-28, in the first quarter, Tennessee had a 154-30 advantage in the second stanza.
- This was the sixth time in the past two seasons that Tennessee put 45 or more points on the scoreboard.
- Tennessee was five for five in the red zone vs. Virginia Tech, scoring four TDs and adding a field goal.
- Senior quarterback Joshua Dobbs accounted for five touchdowns, passing for three and rushing for two more.
- Dobbs became Tennessee’s all-time leading rushing quarterback on his 40-yard run in the third quarter, passing Jimmy Streater (1,374, 1976-79). Dobbs finished with 106 yards on 14 carries vs. the Hokies and now has 1,431 rushing yards for his career.
- Dobbs’ 100-yard-plus rushing game was the fourth of his career and was the sixth straight game Tennessee had a player reach that plateau.
- Dobbs also tied a career high with three touchdowns passes, completing 10 of 19. Dobbs also had three TD passes vs. Kentucky (11/15/15) and Georgia (10/10/15).
- Dobbs connected with sophomore wide receiver Jauan Jennings for Tennessee’s first score of the evening, a five-yard strike in the second quarter. It was the first TD reception of Jennings’ career and Dobbs’ 28th scoring toss.
- Jennings is the 10th different receiver to catch a TD pass from Dobbs.
- Dobbs found sophomore Josh Malone for a 38-yard scoring strike in the second stanza to help knot the game at 14. It was Malone’s fifth career TD reception and Dobb’s 29th scoring pass. It also marked the second straight game Malone had a lengthy TD catch (67 vs. Appalachian State).
- It was the first rushing TD of the season for the senior signal-caller and the 21st of his career.
- Dobbs hit his third TD pass of the evening, finding Alvin Kamara on a 23-yard play. It was career TD pass 30 for Dobbs and the fourth career TD catch for Kamara.
- Dobbs had a nifty dash from 27 yards out in the fourth quarter for his second rushing TD of the evening and 22nd of his career.
- John Kelly added UT’s third rushing TD of the game, finding paydirt from four yards out in the fourth period. It was his first score this season and second of his career. He scored in the last game he played vs. Northwestern.
- With 99 rushing yards (on 22 carries), Jalen Hurd moved into eighth place on UT’s career rushing yardage list with 2,396. He passed Travis Stephens (2,336, 1997-2001), Reggie Cobb (2,360, 1987-89), Curt Watson (2,364, 1969-71) and Montario Hardesty (2,391, 2005-09) tonight.
- Hurd had a four-game streak of 100-yard rushing games halted, finishing with 99 yards on 22 carries. He now has 13 career games with 20 or more rushing attempts.
Defensively Speaking
- The Vols now have forced a turnover in 28 of their last 32 games, causing Virginia Tech to commit five miscues, all fumbles.
- Sophomore free safety Micah Abernathy set a school record, pouncing on three of the Hokies’ fumbles.
- UT has forced multiple turnovers in 20 of its last 37 games.
- Senior linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin led Tennessee with 13 tackles, marking the first time this season and seventh time in his career he had tallied 10 or more stops. Eight of his stops were solos.
- Cameron Sutton broke up one pass vs. Virginia Tech. He moved into a tie for second in passes defended with Dwayne Goodrich (22 PBU/12 INT, 1996-99) and Preston Warren (26 PBU/8 INT, 1987-90) with his 34th pass defended (27 PBU/7 INT, 2013-Present) in the first quarter.
- With Tennessee trailing 14-0 early in the second quarter, sophomore free safety Micah Abernathy collected the first fumble recovery of his career and UT’s first of the season. The timely takeaway was converted into a touchdown by the Vols on the next play. He added two more recoveries in the fourth quarter.
- Tennessee recorded three sacks. Linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr., tackle Kendal Vickers and end Corey Vereen each had one.
- Junior strong safety Todd Kelly Jr. had his first career fumble forced and defensive end Corey Vereen recovered it for the second of his career in the third quarter.
- Vickers forced the fumble in the fourth quarter that Abernathy recovered.
- Shy Tuttle came up with Virginia Tech’s fifth fumble of the night.
- The 69-yard first-quarter TD run by Virginia Tech’s Travon McMillian was the longest play from scrimmage allowed by Tennessee since Nov. 22, 2014 (73-yard pass from Missouri’s Maty Mauk to Jimmie Hunt).
Special Teams
- Junior kicker Aaron Medley now has scored 237 points, passing James Stewart (234, 1991-94) and Stanley Morgan (236, 1973-76) to move into eighth place on UT’s career scoring list.
- Medley now is 44-of-61 on career field goal attempts, including 3-4 this season after kicking a 34-yarder in the second quarter. He missed from 47 yards in the third period.
- Medley was 6-of-6 on PATs. He is now 105-of-106 for his career.
- Trevor Daniel averaged 42.5 yards on six punts, including two inside the 20 and one of 50 or more yards. He now has 30 inside the 20 in his career and 25 kicks of 50 or more yards.

- Officials reviewed and confirmed a Virginia Tech fumble that was recovered by Corey Vereen.
- Officials reviewed a muffed VT punt that was recovered by Micah Abernathy and confirmed the call on the field.
