MELBOURNE, Australia — Tennessee freshman Scott Jones opens singles qualifying Wednesday at the Australian Open at Melbourne Park.
Jones will make his Grand Slam qualifying debut when he faces former Tulsa standout Marcelo Arevalo in the opening round.
A native of Perth, Australia, Jones earned his wild card into singles qualifying by winning the Australian 18U singles title last month. He played in the Australian Open boys tournament last year, making the semifinals of the doubles championship.
Former Vols John-Patrick Smith and Tennys Sandgren are also playing qualifying this week in Melbourne. Smith won his opening round over Agustin Velotti of Argentina 7-6(6), 6-3. Sandgren faces Kimmer Coppejans of Belgium.
