PANAMA CITY, Panama -- Tennessee's Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara and Felipe Strobach opened play in the 2017 Latin America Amateur Championship on Thursday at Club de Golf de Panama.
Serrano Guevara, who is representing Mexico, finished the day tied for 48th after carding a 4-over 74. He started on the back nine and rebounded from bogeys on the 12th and 14th holes with a birdie on the par-4 15th. Following a bogey on the third hole and a double-bogey on the par-5 fourth, he closed the round with five-straight pars.
Strobach, who is playing for Peru, is tied for 88th after shooting 8-over 78. Like Serrano Guevara, he found some consistency in his final five holes. He started on the front nine and was 6-over at the turn, which was a result of one double bogey and five bogeys to just one birdie. After bogeys on the 12th and 13th, Strobach had five-straight pars to finish the round.
Peru's Julian Perico leads the 108-player field after shooting 6-under 64 on Thursday.
Serrano Guevara will start Friday's second round from the first tee box at 12:51 p.m. ET. Strobach will begin on the back nine with an 8:10 a.m. ET tee time.
