Men's Tennis Loses to Georgia Tech on Road
January 22, 2017 | Men's Tennis
ATLANTA -- The Tennessee men's tennis team lost their first road match of the season 7-0 to Georgia Tech on Sunday at Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
The Vols (4-1) lost a tight doubles point that came down to court 2, and Georgia Tech kept up momentum by winning five of six first sets in singles.
"Today, I thought Georgia Tech handled the important moments well, and that was the difference," Tennessee head coach Sam Winterbotham said. "The score suggests it was a thumping, but the doubles point was right there for us and we had belief in every singles match. Give Georgia Tech a lot of credit; their players made a difference when a difference was needed to be made.
"Our team is talented. I'm aware of what we can accomplish. We have two great opportunities next weekend, and we will prepare for them now."
Georgia Tech (1-1) eventually picked up the singles points to clinch the match. In his first match against a top-10 opponent, UT sophomore Timo Stodder lost to No. 9 Christopher Eubanks at the top of the lineup 6-4, 6-4.
Georgia Tech also picked up a win on court 2 as 61st-ranked Andrew Li beat junior Luis Valero 6-4, 6-2 and clinched the match at 4-0 when Cole Fiegel defeated freshman Luca Wiedenmann 6-3, 6-3.
The doubles point came down to the wire as Valero and Jack Schipanski won for the Vols 6-4 on court 1, but Georgia Tech answered with a 6-3 win on court 3. Stodder and Scott Jones served in an attempt to force a tiebreaker but lost the final game and match 7-5, their first loss of the spring.
UP NEXT: The Vols travel to Harvard next week to take on Harvard and Cornell on the road. The Vols are facing Harvard for the first time since a Knoxville victory in 2009. It will be the UT's first ever dual match against Cornell.
