Men's Tennis Ousts Tennessee Tech, 6-1

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- With a strong start to singles play, the Tennessee men's tennis team defeated Tennessee Tech 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
Tennessee (6-2) played at home for the first time in nearly three weeks and carried doubles momentum into singles play by winning all six first sets over Tennessee Tech (2-2).
The Vols on the even-numbered courts led the way to clinching the team victory. Freshman Luca Wiedenman was off court first with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Jorge Alfonzo at No. 6, sophomore Srdjan Jakovljevic defeated Guillermo Nicolas 6-3, 6-2 on court 4 and junior Luis Valero secured the match at 4-0 with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Alberto Esteban on court 2.
"I'm very satisfied with today because everyone was focused," Tennessee head coach Sam Winterbotham said. "We're growing in confidence and we're growing in closeness as a team. It's free speed when you are all rowing in harmony. We didn't have emotional ups and downs, and I think our level is continuing to improve."
After the match was decided, senior Jack Schipanski and Scott Jones won matches to put Tennessee up 6-0.
Tennessee Tech got its team point at the top of the lineup to end the afternoon when Eduardo Mena defeated sophomore Timo Stodder in a third-set tiebreaker.
"Today was a challenge for some players individually; they weren't feeling too good," Winterbotham said. "It was great to see the resiliency to compete the best they could and not make any excuses.
"Srdjan was fantastic. My feeling was it was his best performance as a Volunteer. He pushed through and managed his emotions and energy in a great way."
UP NEXT: The Vols host Tulsa at 6 p.m. in their first night match of the season Friday. Admission is free at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
"It's going to be a great atmosphere indoors," Winterbotham said. "Tulsa is a very feisty team, and it will be a great evening of tennis. The energy will be through the roof."
