KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- University of Tennessee student-athletes gathered to celebrate athletic achievements, academic accomplishments and community service during the 11th annual Volscars at the Knoxville Convention Center Monday night.
Volunteers across all sports were treated to dinner, videos featuring various student-athletes, and an awards ceremony to honor the efforts given by the young men and women who represent Tennessee athletics. Awards included Comeback of the Year and Male and Female Athlete of the Year.
While the past year witnessed many memorable performances on the field, track, court, and in the pool, Tennessee recognized the commitment to excellence shown in the classroom as well. Eighty-seven student-athletes are set to graduate in 2017. Over the past year, 65 student-athletes made the Spring 2016 SEC Honor Roll, 57 made the Fall 2016 SEC Honor Roll and 41 appeared on the Winter 2016-17 SEC Honor Roll. Forty-four Tennessee freshmen student-athletes made the first-year SEC honor roll.
The ceremony also acknowledged the achievements made by student-athletes in community service. This year, 15 Vols across different sports were selected members of the 2016-17 SEC Community Service Teams.
Tennessee presented the Inspiration Award to freshman Gashaw Duhamel, a deaf distance runner for Tennessee's cross country and track and field teams. Duhamel was recognized for the way he inspires others through his relentless approach to his collegiate career.
