KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Coming off a seventh place finish at the SEC Women's Golf Championship earlier this month, the Tennessee Volunteers were selected as a No. 8-seed and will travel to Athens, Georgia, for NCAA Regional play. The selection was aired live Thursday morning on the Golf Channel at 11:00 a.m. ET, marking the program's 25th consecutive bid to compete in the NCAA postseason.
Competition will take place from Monday, May 8 through Wednesday, May 10 at the University of Georgia Golf Course.
"We are thrilled about being selected to the Athens Regional," said Head Coach Judi Pavon. "We are very familiar with the course and we like the fact that we are close to home."
The team enters regional play with eight top-10 finishes, including six top-five finishes on the season. Additionally, the Volunteers have collected 14 top-10 placements individually. Most notably, freshman Micheala Williams carded three birdies on her final four holes of the SEC Championship to move up four spots into a tie for seventh place.
With the selection, Pavon has now led each of her teams to an NCAA Regional since taking over the helm of the program in 2000. She has also taken the Vols to 11 NCAA Championships during her tenure.
From each of the four regionals, the low six teams and the low three individuals not on those teams (for a total of 24 teams and 12 individuals) will advance to the NCAA National Championships, May 19-24, 2017, hosted by Northern Illinois University at Rich Harvest Farms, in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
The men's and women's championships will be broadcast by Golf Channel with more than 100 hours of news and tournament coverage planned.
