Tennessee Advances To Big 12 Grand Finals

OAK RIDGE, TENN. --Tennessee Rowing had a good showing on day one of the Big 12 Championship at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge on Saturday, advancing boats to all five Grand Finals on Sunday.

The 1V8+ started the day for the Vols, squaring off against Oklahoma, Kansas State and Old Dominion. Tennessee got off to a fast start, leading the pack to the halfway point, but they ultimately couldn't hold on to the lead and crossed the line just over five seconds behind Oklahoma with a time of 6:33.065. Kansas State took third with a time of 6:38.861, and Old Dominion finished fourth at 6:46.945.
In a close race the 2V8+ also took second, making it down the course in 6:34.356, just 1.5 seconds behind first place Oklahoma. Alabama came in third with a time of 6:57.662 and West Virginia took fourth at 7:07.385.
In the first heat of the 1V4+, Texas won with a time of 7:07.812. Tennessee came in second at 7:21.123 followed by Kansas (7:24.485) and Old Dominion (7:52.074).
The Vols 2V4+ finished second in their heat, posting a time of 7:31.644. Texas took first with a time of 7:12.170, and Kansas State came in third at 7:34.257.
Tennessee squared off against Oklahoma, Alabama and Old Dominion in the 3V8+, taking third with a time of 6:56.500. Oklahoma won the race at 6:44.535, and Alabama and Old Dominion finished second and fourth respectively.
In the last race of the day, the Grand Finals of the 3V4+, Tennessee finished fourth behind Texas, Alabama and Kansas with a time of 7:59.919. The Longhorns won the event, making it down the course in 7:21.372.
Tennessee will compete in all five Grand Final events on Sunday. Racing will begin Sunday morning at 9 a.m. with an awards ceremony scheduled for noon. Three events will be scored to determine the NCAA automatic qualifier from the Big 12 Conference. The most points will be awarded for the results in the first varsity eight followed by the second varsity eight and the first varsity four.
