Gregg’s Grand Slam Propels Lady Vols Past Mizzou, 7-4

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Meghan Gregg hit a two-out Grand Slam in the sixth inning to lead No. 4/4 Tennessee to a 7-4 win over Missouri on Friday night at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
The Lady Vols (22-1, 1-0 SEC) continued their habit of hot starts with two runs in the first inning. Chelsea Seggern loaded the bases for UT after she was hit by a pitch, and Abby Lockman drove a base knock to right field that scored Aubrey Leach and Gregg as Tennessee took an early 2-0 lead.
UT was able to capitalize on a bases-loaded situation again in the fifth. After Gregg walked to advance runners on first and second, Seggern added another RBI to her terrific season with a soft ground ball up the first base line that brought home Leach from third and increased the Lady Vol lead to three.
Mizzou would answer in the top of the sixth, as Callie Martin hit a two-run double to left field that cut the deficit to 3-2 and gave the Tigers new life.
Tennessee pulled away in the bottom half, however, as back-to-back singles from Leach and Jenna Holcomb put CJ McClain on third and loaded the bases for Gregg. The senior proceeded to deliver when her team needed it most, launching a shot to right center to increase the advantage to 7-2.
Although Mizzou cut into the lead again on a Kolby Romaine two-run homer in the seventh, Caylan Arnold was able to shut it down and earn the winning decision, improving her record on the year to 11-0. Arnold finished with eight strikeouts in six innings.
Lauren Rice fell to 4-6 with the loss. Rice struck out nine batters in six innings of work for the Tigers (16-8, 0-1 SEC).
